Lending Helping Hands

Lending Helping Hands Mission is to provide a variety of resources via community outreach to the homeless/unsheltered, youth & the seniors in PETERSBURG, Virginia.

Lending Helping Hands is more than our name, lending helping hands is what we do. Lending Helping Hands is a 501(c)(3) tax exempt community based, non-profit organization. We were established December 17, 2020 during the global COVID pandemic. We believed we could make a difference by helping others. Our mission is to provide resources through community outreach to the unsheltered/homeless communi

ty in both Richmond and Petersburg especially the youth in Petersburg, Virginia. In 2023, we plan to implement initiatives that focus on food insecurity, water distribution, public educational system, personal hygiene distribution, senior citizens, health services, veterans, financial literacy, LBGTQIA and the wellbeing of others in our communities. Lending Helping Hands is not just our name, it is our lifestyle.

Please join me by wishing Tanya Cooksey , one of Lending Helping Hands Board Members and one of the kindest person I have ever meet a Happy Birthday.

Tanya has been an asset and has gone out of her to ensure that our mission is known by many people. It has been a pleasure working with her these last few years.

She spearheads our Thanksgiving Holiday Meal Box Giveway every year. She is my Sip and Smoke partner at one of Petersburg's hidden gems, bka Resolution Winery.

Emma and I started making 200 bags of Hats and Gloves for kids. I stopped because my arm is hurting. She was still going like the Energizer Bunny.

Less than 75 bags left. Maybe I will finish them tomorrow morning. I have exceeded my physical capacities today.

Lending Helping Hands hosted our LAST Back to School Giveaway on July 25, 2026. We along with other community partners blessed 473 PETERSBURG students with a variety of school supplies, brand new shoes, diapers and wipes, snack bags, fresh strawberries and a bread to go.

Also, Andre Cason with Cason Funnel Cake Truck was on-site toward the later half of the event with his FUNsize funnel cakes for sale.

However, there are still 4 additional Back to School events going on today that I have seen posted in Petersburg.They are listed in order of start times.

There is NO reason for any student in Petersburg to be without supplies this year.

This week...
Lending Helping Hands has received calls since Saturday about the elevators NOT working properly for about 3 months. There is clearly a problem. Folk have been trapped inside the one working elevator on at least 2 occasions lately. This building houses 62 year old and disabled individuals.

I even reached out to a dear friend that connected me with W Howard Myers. I voiced my concerns and he meantioned that someone had meantioned the elevator issue to him.

Joe Morrissey even called me days later after receiving my message about my concerns in regards to the Lafayette House.

Well, I have intentionally not served this facility because I have family living there. I did not want any conflict of interest or favoritism. But at this point my cousin, Dena Brooks and myself had our 1st but not our last conversation with management. It was well over due.

I want to be transparent and let it be know that my concern is solely about the well-being of the people that I don't know and not for any political reason.
