USA Patient Network Contact information, map and directions, contact form, opening hours, services, ratings, photos, videos and announcements from USA Patient Network, Nonprofit Organization, Petaluma, CA.

The USA Patient Network consists of patients, caregivers, and their friends and family members that are united by a common goal: to make sure that medical treatments are as safe, effective, and as affordable as possible. The USA Patient Network is a network of trained patient advocates ready and willing to provide patient perspectives and feedback on research design and strategy issues to federal

agencies and researchers whose work determines which outcome measures provide adequate evidence of the safety and effectiveness of treatments. We focus on on the clinical research designs and criteria needed to prove the safety and effectiveness of medical products as a way of introducing patients to the scientific and statistical concepts that are especially important to patients. Because of the relatively small number of patient partners independently participating in FDA public forums, meetings, and other stakeholder events, the opportunities to do so will be a major focus of the proposed project. however, the Network and training will be very useful to patient partners who want to share their perspectives with other federal public health agencies as well as with university researchers.

The BRAT diet isn't for annoying children. What is it, and is it a good idea?

For years, people with diarrhea or nausea were told to eat bananas, rice, applesauce, and toast — the “BRAT” diet.

But experts no longer recommend limiting yourself to only those four foods. The diet does not provide enough nutrients, and there is no good evidence that it helps people recover faster.

Bland foods may feel better when you are sick. Rice and applesauce are helpful if you have diarrhea. But the evidence does not support eating only BRAT foods.

The takeaway: Some health advice sticks around for a long time despite the lack of evidence.

Eighty-one pairs of identical twins. In every pair, one sibling had multiple sclerosis and the other did not. They share the exact same DNA. They grew up in the exact same environment. The difference was hiding in their stomachs.

Researchers at the Ludwig Maximilian University of Munich studied these twins to isolate the variable. They found two specific strains of gut bacteria that were significantly higher in the siblings with MS: Eisenbergiella tayi and Lachnoclostridium.

To prove it was not a coincidence, they introduced these exact microbes into mice. The mice immediately developed MS-like symptoms.

It is a massive breakthrough. MS is an autoimmune disease, but the trigger looks to be bacterial. This gives doctors a physical starting line. If we know the exact bacteria that lights the fire, we might soon be able to put it out before the first clinical symptoms ever appear.
