On July 15, 1954, the Boeing 367-80, commonly known as the "Dash 80," completed its maiden flight from Renton Field near Seattle, Washington. Piloted by Boeing test pilots Alvin M. β€œTex” Johnston and Richard L. β€œDix” Loesch, the prototype jet airliner remained airborne for 2 hours and 4 minutes before landing safely at Boeing Field. This pivotal event marked the first flight of what would become the basis for both the Boeing 707 and the KC-135 Stratotanker, ushering in a new era of jet-powered aviation.

The Dash 80 project began in the early 1950s as Boeing's response to the growing need for faster, more efficient commercial air travel and military refueling aircraft. At a time when piston-engine planes still dominated the skies, Boeing invested $16 million of its own funds (about $200m today) to build the prototype without a confirmed buyer. Drawing from military jet technology developed during and after World War II, the aircraft was engineered to demonstrate the feasibility and advantages of jet propulsion for civilian and military purposes alike.

The successful first flight of the Dash 80 had profound implications for global aviation. It quickly led to the development of the Boeing 707, which revolutionized air travel by offering faster transcontinental and intercontinental service, and the KC-135, which became a backbone of the U.S. Air Force's aerial refueling fleet. The Dash 80 cemented Boeing’s leadership in the commercial jet market and helped transition the airline industry into the jet age.

Did you ever get to fly on a 707?
