She felt so unheard. This should never happen.
Negotiations are difficult. When there’s a power dynamic involved, it can seem impossible.
How do parents balance advocating for their child while respecting the advice of a medical professional? When these two things are seemingly at odds, it can feel increasingly stressful.
We recently helped a mom get care for her baby. We helped connect her with Physical Therapy for feeding issues, helped her get a tongue tie release, and provided an evaluation with an amazing Speech Therapist who assessed all things related to swallow. From this evaluation, the recommendation was to see a specialist at a leading children’s hospital for a specific study to better understand the baby’s feeding difficulty.
Here’s where things got a little messy.
The pediatrician refused to write a referral. The Physical Therapist called and tried to bring clarity to the situation.
It was a challenging phone call.
Eventually, the referral was sent over to the hospital. But the mom felt so unheard, so challenged, so belittled.
Using proven negotiation techniques that focus on achieving the desired outcome can be especially valuable when emotions are involved.
Has this happened to you? How did it work out?
