Having U.S. forces on bases in NATO nations is not just a pure expense. It's not like we provide military presence soley for the benefit of the host nation. The United States benefits in many ways by maintaining a presence around the world. Not only does it give us physical access to regions otherwise more difficult to access, the partnerships provide political leverage in the region that other nations only wish they could pull off and make it easier to maintain proficiency with host nation militaries, their logistics and communications networks and intel gathering efforts, embassy support etc. Importantly, we also get a chance to build trust and respect for our military and our country as a whole. But we have to have a people (and a president) worthy of respect and trust for that part to work. We become an isolationist nation at our own peril.
