UrbanPromise International Investing in Leaders. Inspiring Change. Transforming Communities. UrbanPromise started working with the children of Camden, New Jersey in 1988.

Since 1988, the UrbanPromise model has been replicated in other cities in North America including UrbanPromise sites in Vancouver (British Columbia), Toronto (Ontario), and Wilmington (Delaware). In 2003, the model was replicated in Malawi, Africa when William Nyasulu established YouthCare. UrbanPromise International has been established to formalize this process and provide the supports necessary for the model to be used in other communities. In 2008, RiseMalawi Ministries, ProjectTEACH, and ChristCares Ministries were established by interns from Malawi. UrbanPromise Honduras launched full time programs in June 2009 and Rays of Hope established in Blantyre, Malawi in the fall of 2009. Camp Courage was a pilot program launched in Miami, Florida in the summer of 2010, and in July of 2011 Trenton, New Jersey became home to the newest UrbanPromise site.

For the last decade, UrbanPromise International alumni Vanessa Mwangala, has lived as a beacon of light for hundreds of young women whose lives have been transformed by the hope, compassion and advocacy of her non-profit organization called Voices Awake.

This past week Vanessa and her team were honored by the George and Amal Clooney Foundation in London at the annual Albie Awards. Each year the Albie Awards recognize a few select leaders who are making our world more just by working alongside the poor, the disenfranchised and the voiceless.

On behalf of UrbanPromise International we would like to congratulate Vanessa and the Voices Awake staff for their enduring commitment to the young women of Malawi. We hope this recognition and attention will open doors and opportunities for your work to expand and flourish.

I’m guilty.

From elementary school through high school. College through graduate school.

I just assumed they would always be available. Like oxygen. Like gravity.

Each year I’d show up to school and there they were, waiting for me. In my desk. On the shelves of the library. In my locker.

Books. Picture books. Text books. Workbooks. History books. Books were simply an expected part of my life.

And those books shaped me. They fueled my imagination and took me to other worlds. Stimulated my thinking. Helped shaped my moral development.

Dr. Suess. The Call of the Wild. The Hardy Boys. A Tree Grows
in Brooklyn. The Chronicles of Narnia. To Kill A Mockingbird…..

I never stopped to wonder what my education would look like without them.

So listening to our teachers in Malawi four weeks ago was sobering. They weren’t complaining. They were simply telling the truth.

“I have 185 children in my class,” shared Mary, a 6th grade teacher in Northern Malawi. “I have one book.”

One book. 185 students.

Later, a group of high school teachers at YouthCare Ministries made another plea: “Can you help us get some text books?”

One teacher explained, “I have 90 students in my science class. It’s almost impossible to teach without text books.”

I promised to help.

In just a few weeks, UrbanPromise will open a new all-girls’ high school in Malawi, re-start afterschool programs in five countries, and assist seven other affiliate schools with their curriculum needs.

And they all need books.

Join UrbanPromise International on October 3 at 7:30am (9:00 a.m. launch) for Paddle for Promise—a fun day on the water with a powerful purpose: raising funds to support schools serving children and young people attending our affiliate schools in Africa.

We’re looking for individual paddlers, families, friends, and church teams to join us - no paddling experience necessary.

👉 The challenge: Each individual paddler commits to raising a minimum of $1,000. We will provide you with the tools and resources to meet your goal.

5 YEARS OF MINISTRY AND AN EXCITING NEW MILESTONE

As we approach a massive milestone this coming July, celebrating 5 years of service through Good Promise Ministries, I am filled with so much gratitude. When I look back over these five foundational years, the incredible support, love, and partnership that friends and family have poured into my life and this mission simply cannot be quantified.

To launch us into our next exciting phase of growth, we are running a special campaign throughout May and June to raise $5,000 USD for a dedicated ministry minivan, the Hope Oasis Express!

This vehicle is going to completely change the game for our daily operations, providing vital, safe transportation for our youth leadership cohorts and our growing number of program graduates transitioning into higher education institutions.

At Thompson Memorial Presbyterian Church, we worshipped the Lord with our song and dance 🎶🙌

We experienced a beautiful service, which focused on personal stories of how Jesus is moving in the lives of church members.

Our senior fellows Hudson and Amorro also got to share their testimonies of how God is expanding his kingdom through their lives.
