📢 🛑 Protect Disability Rights Now!

The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) has issued a “direct final rule” that would eliminate a key protection under Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act—the requirement that new buildings constructed or renovated with federal funds be accessible to people with disabilities.

🚫 DOE now calls this requirement “unnecessary” and “burdensome.” If this rule takes effect, it would:
•❌ Eliminate enforceable accessibility standards for new federally funded buildings
•❌ Allow renovations to proceed without ramps, elevators, accessible restrooms, and other basic accommodations
•❌ Undermine the civil rights of people with disabilities

🗓 This change is scheduled to become final on July 15, 2025—unless enough public comments are submitted by this Sunday, June 15.

📣 We urge you to speak out now. It only takes a few minutes to submit a comment, and your voice can help stop this rollback. ✍️

Feel free to copy and paste any of the comments below—or use them as inspiration to write your own message opposing the rule.

I strongly oppose this rule—removing accessibility standards is unacceptable and discriminatory.

I disapprove of DOE’s decision to eliminate Section 504 protections for new federally funded buildings.

I oppose this rollback—it threatens basic civil rights for people with disabilities.

I do not support this rule—accessibility must remain a requirement, not an option.

I strongly disapprove—this action undermines decades of progress toward inclusion and equity.

Let’s stand together to protect accessibility and civil rights for all.
