Picture Birmingham

Picture Birmingham Sunset and Skyline Pictures of Birmingham, Alabama and surrounding areas taken by Rachel Callahan, all sales supporting The WellHouse Ministries.

Picture Birmingham is an organization started by Rachel Callahan, a Birmingham Alabama blogger. She began an obsessive journey in taking sunset and skyline photos in and around Birmingham in 2013. Late in 2013, she felt God calling her to sell prints of the photos to support The WellHouse, a ministry rescuing women, children, and men from Sex Trafficking. Using a local printer, Rachel now has Prin

ts (printed on 100% cotton art archival paper), canvases, and luxurious note cards available for purchase on her website, with 100% of the profits going to The WellHouse. Picture Birmingham also has a daily blog of her photos, and will be continuously updated with new products and photos.

Three Mushrooms and a Salamander. Trail Running requires one to keep an eye on the ground - I learned this early on in my trail running days, a decade ago, when I tripped on a root and broke my elbow. The downside is that if the views are vast and wide, sometimes you have to stop to appreciate them. The upside is that sometimes the views at your feet are tiny and otherworldly, and though you still have to stop to appreciate them, at least you didn’t miss them. Mushrooms and salamanders look like they belong to another world - a bright, candy-colored land full of magic and adventure. If only we could figure out how to follow them back there.

I’m not a great gardener - it’s my second year to attempt it. Plants grow and then die too soon; bugs invade and I can’t make them leave. However, the colors and flavors that do make it through the battle of nature make me so, so happy.

Noah comes in my room. In his normal monotone, he says, “have you looked out the window?” I was distracted and said “yes, it’s foggy today.” Noah, monotone, “I don’t think you have.” I looked again.

If we’d known how hard the hike was, we probably wouldn’t have attempted it - so we’re all extraordinarily glad we didn’t know. The rental house we’re staying in (the cute blue one to the left of the second picture) backs up to Loch Lomond and the Trossachs National Park, and that mountain peak behind it is called The Steeple.

How wonderful that there’s a trail just behind the house up to the wonderful view!

Obviously, we would have to try it. And it was incredible - the views from every angle all the way up were stunning. Also all the way up, the trail was a running stream that sucked your feet into its mud or had slippery rocks or both. And if you chose to step on the tall grass instead, it held hidden potholes to take you even deeper into the mountain. It was much steeper than it looks in photos - the kind of steep that leaves you wondering exactly how much harder it will be to come back down - because it’s quite clearly going to be harder. Every time we thought we’d done the “steep scrambling part”, we got to a steeper scrambling part. And of course the weather changed every ten minutes between sun, wind, drizzle, clouds, and chill.

But we did it.

And it was absolutely worth it. Even while we were trying to figure out how to get back down without sacrificing anyone’s ankles to the mountain. We felt like we truly conquered the Scottish Highlands. And brought half of it back to the house with us, traveling in our shoes.

On the shores of Lochgoilhead, Scotland…
Our travel day(s) got a little more adventurous than we planned when we had a flat tire an hour from the airport, and both the rental car company and roadside assistance kept delaying sending help, so we took the adventure by the horns, figured out how to get a tax back to the airport and got a replacement rental car, turning our 22 hour travel day into a 26 hour travel day. did admirably learning how to drive on the wrong side of the road on little sleep and less food, though I did pull back out my “teaching a teenager how to drive” code words to let him know when he was drifting too close to the left. But we made it, and whatever happens, it’s an adventure!

I saw an idea online of writing the entire bible, and as soon as I saw it, I knew I wanted to try it, but maybe on a book-by-book basis. (It’s hard to believe, but the internet isn’t *all* useless and unedifying these days.)

I started with Psalm 1 in December, and finally wrote Psalm 150 yesterday.

I didn’t process that Psalms was the longest book of the bible when I chose it - it’s just my favorite, and I wanted to experience it in a new way. 43,742 words later, I can definitely say that I experienced it in a new way.

So what did I learn?

That the art of hand writing itself can be worshipful. And that pairing worship music with writing Psalms quite often creates a parallel message. That my mind focused slowly because I was writing helped me see new things about the Psalms that I’ve never noticed before (like the insane quantity of semicolons in Psalms, but also more useful stuff.) And that when my mind rebelliously meandered down its own path, that was also eye-opening. I found it quite sanctifying when I’d catch myself worrying about something or judging someone, and lo and behold, the Psalm I was writing directly addressed my prone-to-wander soul and would pull me back to worship, along with confession.

It’s been a rewarding experiment, so I wanted to pay the idea forward - if you are interested in trying it or have questions, let me know!
