5th Squad

5th Squad The 5th Squad was created in January 2016 by four founding members of the 184th ESC. These guys wanted to be different. The club would be named the 5th Squad.

5th Squad, a 501(c)(3) Veteran nonprofit, supports Mississippi Veterans in crisis through Quick Reaction Funds (QRF), addressing urgent needs such as utilities, housing, and groceries. The First IV wanted a club to keep everyone together when the military decided to do its best to separate. The First IV wanted to stand out from among the other soldiers, other veterans. The Club was started on the

idea of doing for others. The First IV members were Adam Austin, Michael Collins, Zach Morehead and Lee Stringer. Over several months and many long nights of sharing wisdom and lies, a club name and mascot was finally decided on. The reason for this name is because they wanted to have a name with military significance but also not too “HOOAH”. All formations have four squads. The 5th Squad is part of the formation but also not a part of it at the same time. The Wolf pack and wolf paw was also decided on as part of the club. The club is similar to a wolf pack in that they are not all in the same blood family but they have chosen to be a part of each others family. To be stronger together and have a bond like no other. The 5th Squad has evolved from a “club” into an organization with a vision of helping make the world around us a better place. Our main focuses are God, country and family. The 5th Squad have started and sponsored two main charities, Ruck for Rugrats and Jacob Campbell Golf Scramble. We assist Veterans in Mississippi with immediate, life sustaining needs.

Reminder! Tomorrow is the day! Still time to show up! Shoot us an email. Let’s welcome home a hero!

I received a message recently that honestly hit me pretty hard.

A daughter reached out about her father, a Vietnam Veteran from Mississippi who was drafted in 1966 and served our country during one of the hardest periods in our nation’s history. Like many Vietnam Veterans, he came home to a country that did not welcome him the way it should have. Instead of gratitude, many of those Warriors came home carrying pain, silence, and memories they buried for decades.

Now, later in life, he has finally started reconnecting with fellow Veterans, opening up about his experiences, and finding some healing. His family is taking him on a trip to visit the memorials and monuments dedicated to those who served and sacrificed.

What moved me most was one simple request from his daughter: she wants him to experience the welcome home he never received.

That stuck with me.

Sometimes people ask what 5th Squad is really about. It’s this. It’s showing up for Veterans when it matters. It’s reminding men and women who served that they were never forgotten, even if our country failed to say it at the right time.

I would love for us to come together and help give this Veteran the kind of welcome home he earned decades ago. A handshake. A flag. A smile. A simple “Welcome Home” and “Thank You for Your Service.”

Sometimes healing starts with finally hearing the words that should have been said all along. 🇺🇸

If you would like to participate in this Welcome Home on May 30th at Jackson International Airport, please shoot us an email at [email protected].

Six miles.

Six miles in the rain.
Six miles with soaked boots and tired legs.
Six miles with horns honking and people staring.
Six miles while cars flew by just inches away.
Six miles carrying the weight of names, memories, and sacrifice.

We walked six miles for the 82 Mississippians killed in action since 9/11.
But truthfully, those six miles were for all of them.

For every Soldier, Sailor, Airman, Marine, Guardian, and Coast Guardsman who never made it home.
For every Warrior who gave their tomorrow for our today.
For every flag folded perfectly into the hands of a grieving family.
For every Gold Star family carrying a pain this nation can never fully repay.

Six miles is nothing compared to what they gave.

Because the hard truth is this:
Those men and women will never get to walk another six miles again.

They will never hug their kids again.
Never sit on a porch with family again.
Never laugh with their brothers and sisters in arms again.
Never grow old again.

So we walked.

We walked because remembrance matters.
We walked because freedom has always had a price.
We walked because Memorial Day is not about mattresses, cookouts, or sales.
It is about sacrifice.

And honestly… maybe six miles wasn’t enough.

Maybe we need to do six more tomorrow.
