Phylis recently joined our team as a volunteer, and we are so lucky to have her energy, heart, and commitment to community. She is also a valued part of the Boys & Girls Club of Bellport, continuing a long history of giving back and showing up for others.

A little history behind “Friend of Dorothy”
The phrase dates back to a time when LGBTQ+ individuals had to find subtle, safe ways to identify one another. “Friend of Dorothy” became a coded expression within the community—often linked to Dorothy Gale from The Wizard of Oz—symbolizing kindness, acceptance, and a shared sense of belonging during times when being open wasn’t always safe.

Today, it’s a beautiful reminder of where we’ve come from, and the importance of continuing to support one another. 💫

Phylis, thank you for stepping up, for believing in this mission, and for showing that you don’t have to be a big corporation to make Pride happen. It’s people like you who make Pride happen!

Owned by Michelle Cavaleri and her son, Chris Genovese, both board members of Long Island Equality, SouthShore has been a meaningful part of our Pride family and a continued supporter of our LGBTQIA+ community.

SouthShore Counseling Center provides a supportive space for people of all ages to begin their path “to a brighter tomorrow.” Their services include individual counseling, group counseling, family and relationship support, and telehealth services, helping clients work through life’s challenges in a safe, caring, and healthy environment. Their website highlights support for areas including anxiety, depression, self-esteem, relationship and communication issues, family counseling, co-parenting, and sexual identity issues.
