One of the highlights of the weekend was the service we did for the VFW Post 1247 in Grand Junction, CO. The VFW planned a dinner to honor the Blue Angels crew and pilots, Leap Frogs, and any other veterans were invited in general.
The VFW unfortunately were surprised by the cadets arriving, and were initially very nervous about the concept of feeding our teenagers. As the cadets interacted more with the VFW members, though, and we explained how we had arrived to support in whatever way they could use some eager hands, the cadets from AX-CO-2301 and Training Ship Colorado (SSN-788) did a joint CO/UT color guard, served food, cleaned up tables, washed dishes, tended "bar" of water and iced tea, and just did our Sea Cadet thing learning and serving.
By the end of the evening, our cadets had won some hearts and minds, and received many compliments about how respectful and helpful they were, and much appreciation for the assistance.
