As the only organization focused on loss prevention and security in the restaurant industry, we are dedicated to sharing resources, expertise, and knowledge amongst our peer community. Our organization includes members from all areas of the restaurant industry including Quick Service (QSR), Quick Casual, and Full Service Dining segments. Our membership includes not only Loss Prevention and Security practitioners but other professionals who have responsibilities for loss prevention, security, risk, asset protection and safety. Our annual meeting during the summer offers our members the chance to network with industry leaders, share knowledge and resources, and meet solution providers who can help you address those unique vulnerabilities we find in restaurant environments.

A restaurant near a developing demonstration may have several reasonable options.

Stay open.

Lock one entrance.

Pause dine-in service.

Shift to drive-thru or takeout only.

Send employees home.

Close temporarily.

The difficult part is not identifying the options. It is deciding who has authority to choose one, and what information should trigger that decision.

Those questions should not be answered for the first time during an active event.

In Managing Civil Unrest: Keeping Calm When the Street Gets Loud, RLPSA and TPOP will examine how restaurant organizations can establish decision rights and escalation criteria before conditions begin moving quickly.

We’ll look at the coordination required across Security, LP, Operations, HR, Legal, Communications, and senior leadership, while keeping the needs of the individual restaurant manager in view.

Because when a location calls asking, “What do you want us to do?”, the answer cannot be a conference call that starts 30 minutes later.

Here are some of the highlights from this week's CONNECT event in NJ!

Armored Truck Robberies Case Study:
We kicked off the day with an in-depth case study on a series of armored truck robberies in the Philadelphia metro area. Presenters shared details, lessons, and actionable items from the case to help restaurant practitioners prevent future robberies.

HACCP Systems & Food Safety:
Simon Burns of Wawa, Inc. shared insight on HACCP systems and ways restaurants can prevent foodborne illness before contamination occurs.

Fraud & Scams:
Wendy Hans, CFE of AMC Theatres and Thomas Stein, LPC, CFI, CFE of Paradies Lagardère led a session on fraud and scams, discussing how new AI technology is being used to facilitate scams, as well as new systems that can be implemented at your facility to help verify the validity of calls and emails.

In the afternoon, attendees participated in an interactive session led by RLPSA President Heather Hearn, LPC and Secretary Basia Pietrawska, where they presented a real-life scenario and had attendees work together to share their insights on how to de-escalate situations and prevent violent activity in restaurants.

We then capped off the educational portion of the day with panels featuring solution providers Paig Parish of Blue Dot Safes, Mike Korcuba of Telaid Industries, Inc., Christopher Uiterwyk of IPConfigure Inc., Dr. Cortland Tompkins of IPConfigure Inc. as well as restaurant practitioner Michael Loox, CFI of Sheetz. Panelists shared their expertise on tools and solutions restaurants can use for asset protection, security, and safety.

Finally, Joe Hyman of Waffle House, Inc. House led an expert panel on traditional and virtual guards, where Kris Vece, LPC from Protos Security and Matthew Smitheman from Interface Systems discussed the use off-duty law enforcement and security professionals on your premises, when technology may be the better solution, and how organizations can effectively implement both.

We ended the day with an amazing reception featuring the opportunity to see an incredible Proto Hologram demonstration from our hosts at Wachter.
