The new (but not improved 😒) snowmoji map is here. A storm system last week brought precipitation to northern Utah, while the rest of the state remained dry, echoing the familiar pattern of a broken La Niña record. Temperatures have been high enough to trigger early snowmelt in some areas, further straining our water supply. Hydrologic model projections indicate total runoff will be less than 70% of average across most of the state, with southern Utah facing an even steeper deficit at just 30% of average. Reservoir storage remains a bright spot, currently about 20% above typical levels. However, with historically low snowpack in some regions and 95% of Utah’s water supply dependent on it, now we must be more mindful than ever in how we use water.
