Some moons light the sky…
This one might touch your heart.

On May 31, the rare Blue Moon will rise beneath a sky filled with stars, glowing softly enough to stop people in their tracks.

Despite its name, the Moon won’t actually appear blue, but this rare seasonal full Moon only happens once every few years, making it one of the most anticipated lunar events of 2026.

Look toward the eastern horizon after sunset for the brightest glow.

For one quiet night, the universe may feel a little closer than usual. 🌌

Hiring a mosquito barrier spray for the season changes what else is alive in the yard for the next three weeks.

The pyrethroid mist coats every blade of grass and every leaf, and the residue stays. Fireflies landing on treated grass die. Monarch caterpillars on nearby milkweed were documented dying for up to three weeks after a single application (Oberhauser 2006). Honey bees were harmed 28 days after treatment in a 2022 trial. The mosquitoes return in one to two days. The dragonflies, fireflies, and bees that would have hunted alongside them do not.

🌿 What works instead:
- Bti dunks in standing water — kills only mosquito larvae, harmless to everything else
- A five-gallon bucket with straw and a Bti dunk acts as a community-level egg sink
- A box fan on the patio — mosquitoes are too weak to fly through it
- DEET or picaridin on skin — a bubble around you, not the yard

One switch off the barrier. The dragonflies stay. The fireflies come back 🌿

The hummingbird at your feeder this May — the one that hovered for a second to check you out before drinking — is almost certainly the same bird that was at your feeder last May. Banding studies have tracked ruby-throats returning to the exact same yard nine years in a row.

She remembers the feeder. She remembers the porch. She knows which window she can fly past safely. And she just spent eighteen hours flying nonstop across five hundred miles of open Gulf of Mexico to get back here 🐦

That's why the same blur shows up at the same spot every May. It's not coincidence. It's her.

🌿 The three details that matter most this month:
- Never add red dye to her nectar — plain water and plain white sugar, four to one, nothing else. The red on the feeder is enough to attract her. Audubon has been warning against dye for years
- Scrub the feeder every few days — sugar water grows mold and yeast fast in warm weather, and a moldy feeder can kill her. Hot water and a bottle brush, no soap residue
- Don't take the feeder down in September — late migrants and stragglers need fuel. Feeders don't delay migration; daylight does. Leave it up at least two weeks after you see your last hummingbird
