🥾 Challenging for most hikers

This steep climb up to and along the Frostbite Ridge above the Skeetawk ski area offers sweeping views of the surrounding Talkeetna Mountains. Nearly all above tree line, this Hatcher Pass gem is an unforgettable route over trail and tundra that’s home to hardy plants like blueberries, crowberries, and pungent Labrador tea. We’ll take breaks and stay together as a group.

Free for Revel Adventure Club members and first-timers to a Revel event; all others $15.

For our August "Third Saturday Adventure" the Revel Adventure Club hiked up to beautiful Eska Falls in Sutton. At just over 12 miles round-trip and with about 2,500 feet of elevation gain, we enjoyed incredible mountain views, snacking on wild blueberries, plenty of stops to recharge and take photos, and--when back at the trailhead--cold lemonade for all!

What’s one of your favorite things about living in Alaska?
There are so many aspects I love about living in Alaska, and they all boil down to being connected to nature. Living in Alaska has given me plenty of opportunities not only to explore the outdoors but also to reconnect with my essence and rediscover the beauty of a simple lifestyle.

Any specific hiking trails on your bucket list for this summer?
There are so many hiking trails I have yet to explore that my list is endless. However, among the few that I plan to do this year are Blueberry Knoll, April Bowl, Lazy Mountain, Gold Star Peak, and Reed Lakes.

What’s a challenge you face when adventuring outdoors here?
My main challenge when adventuring outdoors in Alaska is safety. That is why I wanted to join this club: to start building a community to continue doing the things I love outdoors while acquiring the skills and knowledge necessary to stay safe when venturing out, either with friends or alone with my dog.

We’ll hike the rolling terrain—formed by ancient glaciers—around Long Lake Loop through boreal forest and along the edge of farm fields. This is one of several trails in the Matanuska Greenbelt system.

⛰If you’ve never climbed Bodenburg Butte, a local landmark, now’s your chance! Even if you’re a regular on the Butte, this guided group outing offers a fresh look at the geology that shaped it and a few cultural history tidbits. How long have you lived in Alaska and what keeps you here?
I first fished commercially in SE Alaska in the summer of 1974, but stayed for good after my summer job in 1976.

Plans for summer?
As much hiking and camping as we can squeeze in between fishing and yard work.

What’s one piece of outdoor gear you can’t live without?
Good hiking shoes.

Favorite Alaska season and why?
Summer and fall; winter too (but could live without breakup).

Where is a place in the world you want to explore?
Currently trying to see every state and every national park; then the rest of the world is our oyster!

Any good books you recommend?
Undaunted Courage, by Stephen Ambrose, about the Lewis & Clark Expedition.
