Advocates, this is an excellent news story about the effort to raise $10 million by July 31 to preserve the land near Jackie and Shadow‘s eagle 🦅 nest. The link to the fundraiser is in the article.

As supporters honor late Friends of Big Bear Valley leader Sandy Steers, the nonprofit races to raise millions to protect what it says is vital foraging habitat for the famous eagles.

Ventura bans glue traps because of how cruel and harmful they are to wildlife. We need to do this in Palm Springs! Palm Springs City Government

The move follows growing concerns about their impact.

Ventura, California, has voted to ban the sale and use of glue traps, becoming one of the largest U.S. cities to take this step. Officials cited concerns about the harm these traps can cause to animals, including birds, small mammals, and pets.

Supporters say the ban reflects a shift toward more humane control methods, focusing on prevention rather than trapping.

Tomorrow is Earth Day. The most impactful thing that you can do for the planet is to support wildlife. Here are some easy things an individual can do:
-End your pesticide company's contract: rodenticides and insect sprays cause secondary poisoning and disrupt the ecosystem.
-Only trim trees after nesting/fledging season (in September till January): trimming during nesting seasons destroys eggs, nests and nestling babies.
-Support wildlife with water during extreme heat.
-Create backyard habitat: rock piles for lizards, native plants for pollinators, dead branch piles for burrowing animals

This is a good explanation of the reasons that went into the Annenberg Wallis overpass:

As part of the feasibility study, planning and environmental review for our project, a tunnel was eliminated from consideration as a solution as it does not provide for a fully connected ecosystem and not all wildlife will use a tunnel. The goal of the Liberty Canyon crossing is to reconnect an entire ecosystem in the middle of one of the world’s biodiversity hotspots, and allow for connectivity of flora and fauna, as well as save the local mountain lion population.

A tunnel would also have been more expensive given some original Caltrans estimates, as you cannot drill the needed size given the distance, and Caltrans would have had to perform a “cut and cover,” which uses excavation equipment to dig a trench and then cover it with concrete. To do this would have required the 101 Freeway—one of the busiest freeways in the world—to close for a period of time.

This is a great message. Please help protect nesting birds — and report those who harm them!

Songbird populations all over the country are plumetting and we all have an obligation to do our part to prevent it. Sometimes that means growing a pair and dealing with some p**p or unsightly nests for a few weeks while babies grow up.

Unfortunately, many landlords and business owners have active nests “cleaned up” and disposed of as if they’re trash. Native birds’ nests are, at worst, a temporary inconvenience. Most people enjoy seeing and hearing birds and watching them raise their young.

Aside from being cruel and illegal, killing a bunch of baby birds is also not a good way to keep your tenants or customers happy. If you’re a landlord or business owner and have tenants or customers complaining about native bird nests, simply inform them that the nests are protected by federal law and that you’ll remove them when the babies have left the nests. No big deal!

We’re asking all of our supporters to help us protect native birds. If you know of a property owner or maintenance company that is destroying active native songbird nests or killing adult or baby native birds, please report them to the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service at 1-800-344-WILD or [email protected].
