Have you ever wondered why some people struggle to stop using substances?

Drugs and alcohol can affect the brain's reward system, changing how a person experiences pleasure, stress, and emotions. Over time, the brain may begin to rely on the substance, increasing the risk of addiction.

Understanding how addiction works can help parents have more informed conversations with their children about substance use and its risks.

Try asking:
đź’¬ "What have you learned about addiction in school or online?"
Open conversations help build trust and understanding.

Parents and Caregivers:
We want to share an important reminder about medication safety at home. Recently, three young people lost their lives after misusing an over-the-counter allergy medication.

Many families think only prescription medications need to be secured, but over-the-counter medicines can also be dangerous when taken incorrectly or in large amounts.

Taking a few simple steps can help keep children and teens safe:

Store all medications—prescription and over-the-counter—in a secure location.
Keep medicines in their original containers.
Monitor quantities and dispose of unused medications properly.
Talk with your children and teens about the risks of medication misuse.

If you suspect a poisoning or medication overdose, contact Poison Control immediately at 1-800-222-1222.
