đź’™ It Truly Takes a Village đź’™

For the last 5 to 6 months, a single mother has called her car "home."

Every day brought challenges - finding a safe place to sleep, a place to shower, and somehow making it to work while carrying the weight of homelessness. Despite it all, she never gave up. She kept showing up, working hard, and holding onto hope.

Behind the scenes, a village came together.

This journey was made possible through the partnership of the Brevard Homeless Coalition, Inc and the Coordinated Entry System, Community of Hope, supportive employers, community resources, dedicated case management, and the love and support of St. Paul Lutheran Church.

Today, that perseverance and partnership led to something beautiful.

Today, she has a home.

Today, she will be reunited with her daughter under a safe roof.

Tonight, they can cook a hot meal, sleep in warm beds, and rest knowing they are finally home.

Housing is more than four walls and a roof. It's safety. It's dignity. It's stability. It's hope.

Thank you to everyone who played a part in making this possible. Together, we are proving that hope is stronger than homelessness.

Welcome home, Mom. ❤️🏠

ATTENDING AUTHOR ALERT: We look forward to meeting Robert W. McNeilly at the Roots of Knowledge Book Signing next Saturday, June 6th at the Gale Center for Hope.

In The Blue Continuum, Robert W. McNeilly details his inspiring career as one of the nation’s longest-serving metropolitan police chiefs. Pioneering Solutions in Law Enforcement Management Chief McNeilly headed the Pittsburgh Bureau of Police from 1996 until 2006. He is recognized for leading Pittsburgh into compliance with the first federal civil-rights “pattern or practice” consent decree in U.S. history. Among his successful tactics: a sweeping accountability-and-training program, which included an innovative early-intervention system for troubled officers that has been called “the gold standard in policing.” His experience in managing police departments and officers under difficult conditions required smart and effective decision-making. At the same time, his dedication to honesty and his drive to do what was right made his work even more challenging. The Blue Continuum points out that not all police are created equal and addresses what needs to be corrected to improve law enforcement organizations. It is a guide for police chiefs and city officials who face critical decisions in managing similar situations in today’s social and political climate. Since 2013, as a partner in The McNeilly Group, LLC, Robert McNeilly has been a federally appointed monitor of the New Orleans Police Department. In that capacity, he oversees NOPD compliance with a consent decree between the City of New Orleans and the U.S. Department of Justice.

ATTENDING AUTHOR ALERT: It is our pleasure to announce that Dr. Sally Shinn will be attending the Roots of Knowledge Book Signing at the Gale Center for Hope on June 6th. This is especially exciting since Sally Shinn is a hero of ours for all of the work she has done in Brevard to ensure that no school child has to be homeless.

Dr. Sally Shinn is a mother of four daughters and has ten grandchildren. She draws upon her own life experiences gained through years spent at home and in various educational settings—from preschool environments to college professorship. A career motivated by mental health, resilience, and welfare concerns has seen Shinn work with kids belonging to different abilities and ages, plus their parents, all her life. Some measures of her professional life include teaching children with special needs and disabilities, parent education programs, teacher training, and lobbying for families. In this light, Shinn’s latest book, titled “How I Use My Kid Power at Home,” reflects her unwavering dedication to leading children into successful and healthy adulthood, strengthening relationships and quality of life for families.

Memorial Day was never meant to simply become a long weekend.

It was never supposed to only mean cookouts, lake trips, sales ads, and fireworks.

It was meant to make us pause.

To remember that the freedoms we enjoy every single day were paid for through the sacrifice of others.

Because beneath all the celebration are families carrying grief that never truly healed.

There are mothers still longing to hear their son’s voice one more time.

Spouses still sleeping on one side of the bed.

Children who grew up knowing their parent through stories instead of memories.

Families who received folded flags instead of homecomings.

For them, life became divided into two moments:
before the knock at the door…
and after.

Before the silence.
Before the heartbreak.
Before they learned that sometimes serving your country costs everything.

And yet-
they gave it anyway.

Young men.
Young women.
People with dreams, families, futures, and lives they should still be living today.

People who should still be here enjoying backyard barbecues, holding grandchildren, and watching fireworks light up the summer sky.

Instead, their sacrifice became the reason the rest of us still can.

Every peaceful morning.
Every child sleeping safely at night.
Every freedom we often take for granted-
someone gave their life protecting it.

That is what Memorial Day is about.

It is freedom echoed through sacrifice.

It is empty chairs at family gatherings.
Photographs held tightly in trembling hands.
Gold Star families learning how to keep going.

This weekend, between the laughter and celebrations, may we take a moment to truly remember.

Not simply with words-
but with gratitude worthy of what they gave.

May we never become so comfortable in freedom that we forget those who never made it home to enjoy it.

❤️🤍💙
