Imagine being capable of contributing, learning, and growing—but never being given the opportunity because someone sees your disability before they see you.

Unfortunately, this is a barrier many people with disabilities face.

October is Disability Employment Awareness Month, a time to recognize the talents, skills, and contributions of workers with disabilities.

Employment is about more than a paycheck. It can provide purpose, independence, confidence, friendships, and the opportunity to be part of something bigger.

And this matters for adults with intellectual disabilities, too.

❤️ **We must stop treating adulthood as something people with disabilities cannot fully experience.**

Not every person will work the same job or need the same level of support. But every person deserves to be considered for opportunities that match their abilities, interests, and goals.

We need employers who are willing to look beyond a diagnosis, organizations that encourage growth, and communities that recognize the value of every individual.

**SEE THE PERSON. SEE THE NEED. SEE THE DIFFERENCE.**

For Giving Tuesday, Joining the Pieces Foundation wanted to show you what your support can actually mean to a special needs adult.

We asked **Marbridge Ranch** a simple question:

**“Why are foundation grants important to Marbridge Ranch?”**

Their answer reminds us that behind every program is a person who depends on it.

Grants help make possible the things that create a meaningful life for their residents — **housing, specialized dietary services, activities, classes, employment, equestrian therapy, and opportunities to participate in Special Olympics.**

These services cost more than what tuition, service fees, and Medicaid/Medicare reimbursements provide.

Foundation support helps fill that gap.

It helps ensure that programs continue without interruption. It helps residents remain **safe, engaged, active, and able to age in place.**

And this is exactly why **Joining the Pieces Foundation exists.**

We don't just see a program.

**We see the people.**

We see the adults who deserve opportunities.
We see the families who need to know their loved ones are cared for.
We see the dedicated people providing these services.
And we see organizations that need support to continue growing and meeting an ever-increasing need.

📚 Tuesday — Teach & Inform: Blindness Awareness ❤️

See the Person. Look Beyond the Disability.

What do we really understand about blindness?

Many people assume that blindness means seeing nothing or that a person who is blind cannot live independently. But blindness and low vision exist across a spectrum, and people experience vision loss in different ways.

With accessible technology, proper training, and the right support, people who are blind can learn, work, build relationships, pursue their goals, and participate in their communities.

🌟 Blindness does not define a person's potential.

Sometimes, the biggest barriers aren't a person's abilities. They're the assumptions other people make about what that person can accomplish.

This is why awareness matters. When we learn more about blindness, we can challenge misconceptions, encourage inclusion, and recognize the abilities of people who are blind or have low vision.

Adults with Down syndrome can continue learning, developing skills, and discovering new abilities throughout their lives.

Everyday skills such as preparing meals, managing money, keeping a schedule, communicating needs, and making decisions can help build confidence and independence.

🌟 Learning doesn't stop when school ends!

With patience, encouragement, and opportunities to practice, adults can continue building the skills they need to participate more fully in everyday life.

We must remember that teaching a skill is not just about completing a task. It's about giving someone the confidence to try, the freedom to make choices, and the opportunity to grow.

🤝 Friday — Foundation Spotlight: Down Syndrome! ❤️

This week, we're shining a spotlight on the National Down Syndrome Society (NDSS) and its work to expand employment opportunities for people with Down syndrome.

NDSS works with employers, community organizations, and other partners to help create more inclusive workplaces and meaningful career opportunities. 🌟

But why does this matter?

Because adults with Down syndrome deserve the opportunity to experience adulthood—not to be viewed as children for the rest of their lives.

They have interests, abilities, goals, and dreams. They deserve opportunities to develop skills, earn a paycheck, build relationships, and contribute to their communities.

Support should open doors to new experiences and greater independence, not create unnecessary limitations.

This October, we recognize both Disability Employment Awareness Month and Down Syndrome Awareness Month.

Meet Erin Thompson, an adult with Down syndrome who worked as an administrative assistant, handling responsibilities such as data entry, expense reports, and filing.

Erin's story reminds us that adults with Down syndrome can develop skills, take on responsibilities, and contribute to the workplace.

❤️ Being an adult with a disability does not mean being a child for life.

Adults deserve opportunities to learn, work, grow, make choices, and discover what they are capable of accomplishing.

Sometimes, the greatest barrier isn't the disability. It's the expectations others place on the person.

These adults are not children waiting for someone else to decide their future. They are individuals with abilities, interests, goals, and the potential to continue growing throughout adulthood.

SEE THE PERSON. ❤️

Why should you donate to special needs adults?

Because sometimes people turn away from what they don't understand.

They see someone who doesn't speak.
Someone who doesn't make eye contact.
Someone who doesn't respond the way they expect.
Someone who needs a little extra attention.
A little extra help.
A little extra care.

And sometimes, they don't see the person at all.

But there is a person there.

A person who deserves to be known.
A person who deserves to be valued.
A person who deserves friendship, purpose, opportunity, dignity and love.

At Joining the Pieces Foundation, we see the person.

But seeing the person isn't enough.

We have to do better.

There is a growing need for organizations that support special needs adults. Families need more options. Adults need more opportunities. And organizations need the resources to grow and meet that need.

We want to help them do that.

We want to help organizations expand their programs, serve more adults, hire the right people, and provide good salaries for the people who provide these important services.

Because caring for special needs adults takes people.

People who show up.
People who understand.
People who are patient.
People who see beyond the disability.
People who provide the extra attention, extra help and extra care.

Those people matter, too.
