What is it like to be the Toastmaster of the Day?

A little nervous at first - but how can you be nervous when you’re surrounded by so many smiling, supportive faces?

A little public speaking wisdom for your feed. 🎤

Great communication isn’t about being perfect — it’s about continuing to learn, practice, get feedback, and improve.

What if being the hero of your life has nothing to do with being perfect?

Jerry Evans is preparing to take “Be the Hero of Your Life” to a much larger stage - a 40-minute presentation (!!) - and he is using our club as part of the process to build and refine it.🙌

Rather than waiting until the speech is “finished,” Jerry is developing it in increments, sharing pieces with our audience and using their feedback to strengthen both his content and delivery.
It’s a great example of how Toastmasters can be used as a real-world laboratory for becoming a better speaker!! 👏👏

Jerry challenged us to rethink what it means to be a hero.

Being a hero isn’t about being flawless or fearless. Sometimes, it simply means making yourself a little braver every day—and that’s what gradually turns you into your own hero.

He introduced concepts such as “3 Acts and 1 Goal”—exploring your origin and your “why,” identifying the obstacles along the way, and recognizing the people around you who make up your “crew.”

He then guided us through a process of discovering our own pathway and identifying our superpower—the unique strengths we can use to move toward our goals.

And then came the fun part…

Underneath his suit, Jerry was secretly wearing a Superman T-shirt!🦸‍♂️

What makes Jerry especially inspiring is that even after years as a Distinguished Toastmaster (DTM), he continues to challenge himself, experiment with new techniques, seek feedback, and sharpen his skills.

He may already be a DTM—but he’s clearly not done becoming a better speaker.

In her previous speech, Virginia Bosserman shared why she made the decision to participate in a clinical trial, along with an overview of what the journey would look like.

This time, she took us with her into the experience itself.

Virginia shared what it was actually like to go through her first treatment.
From some pretty intense tests, to spending hours connected to a very large IV (which, thankfully, gave her plenty of time to clear out 300 emails!), to experiencing the side effects and preparing for more than 20 additional tests ahead.

But what made this speech especially powerful wasn’t the medical journey - it was Virginia’s positiveness throughout it.

She didn’t speak with fear or pessimism.
Instead, she approached the experience with remarkable optimism, humor, and hope.

One thought she shared particularly stayed with us:

“If it doesn’t work for me, oh well. Maybe it will work for someone else—especially the next generation.”

That moment captured the spirit of Virginia’s journey.

And judging by the room, she inspired all of us.

Virginia reminded us that sometimes hope isn’t about knowing how the story will end, but it is about being willing to be part of something that could make the future better for someone else.🩷🧡💙

If you’ve ever wondered whether you’re really getting a good deal when buying a new car, Richard Wescott has plenty of insight to share!

In “Eliminating the Pitfalls of Buying a New Car,” Rick brought together years of experience and lessons from his previous speeches to give us a practical look at the car-buying process.

Rick spent 5 years working as a car salesman, and despite those times he was uncertain about car salesmen’s reputations, those years gave him a fascinating depth of knowledge about the automotive industry, sales tactics, negotiations, and the realities of buying a vehicle.

This speech was a “collection” of Rick’s past lessons, bringing his experience and accumulated knowledge together into one useful topic for anyone who may be in the market for a new car.🚙🚗🚙🚗

Being the Toastmaster of the Day is no small job!
It takes preparation, coordination, and the ability to keep the entire meeting moving smoothly.

For our last meeting, Alan Steiner stepped up to take on the role and put a tremendous amount of effort into making sure everything came together.

From confirming that members had signed up for their roles and submitted their speech details ahead of time, to serving as the MC and keeping the meeting on track, Alan made sure the transitions between speakers and activities ran smoothly.

His preparation and dedication didn’t go unnoticed—our members gave him a well-deserved round of thanks at the end of the meeting! 👏👏👏

And the best part? Everyone has the opportunity to be Toastmaster of the Day - not just once, but as many times as you’d like!

It’s an excellent way to practice meeting facilitation, organization, time management, and leadership skills.

So, who’s ready to take the role next?

How healthy is our Toastmasters club—and how can we make it even better?

Mary Mattran led an engaging educational session using Toastmasters’ “Moments of Truth” to guide us through a self-evaluation of our club.

Together, members reflected on important questions: Do we create a welcoming atmosphere?
Are we supporting and evaluating one another effectively?
Are our meetings and programs exciting and valuable?

This session gave us an opportunity to share our perspectives, celebrate what we’re doing well, and identify areas where we can continue to improve.

As club president, Mary took us through this thoughtful self-evaluation, reminding us that a strong club is built by all of us, together!
