🎤 **Another Successful Club Meeting!** 🎉

Another great meeting in the books at Harper College!

We had a full agenda packed with a variety of speech topics, along with plenty of audience interaction through our evaluation system.
It’s always fun to see our members not only practice their speaking skills, but also learn from each other through thoughtful feedback.

And… We had two guests!🙌
We’re always excited to welcome new people to our meetings and introduce them to our members. Whether you’re looking to improve your public speaking, build confidence, make new friends, or expand your local network, our club is a great place to do it.

Have You Heard of GeoGuessr? Because I hadn’t! 😂

Brian Shields gave us a fascinating speech about GeoGuessr, and this is exactly one of the things I love about being part of our club - you get to learn about something completely new through everyone’s unique interests and topics!

Brian started by explaining what GeoGuessr actually is.
It’s an online game that uses Google Street View, allowing you to virtually travel around the world and try to figure out where you are based on the clues around you.

And honestly, with travel getting more and more expensive these days… 🌍✈️
How economical AND fun is that?!

Brian even turned his speech into an interactive game. He showed us two geographic locations and challenged us to guess where they were, while giving us tips on what clues to look for.

The room got surprisingly competitive—and VERY excited! 😂

This is what makes our meetings so much fun.
We’re not just listening to speeches.
We’re learning, participating, and discovering something new from the people around us.

🎤 The 3 C’s of Attitude

Jerry Evans, the DTM, gave us another inspiring speech at our last meeting.

Can you guess what the 3 C’s stand for?

Choice. Commitment. Confidence.

It starts with the choices we make.
Those choices lead to commitments - and once we truly commit to our actions, we can begin to build confidence.

Simple? Yes. Powerful? Absolutely.

And here’s something I loved hearing from Jerry: even with all his experience, he doesn’t think he’s giving the perfect speech. (What?! 😳)

Instead, he actively looks for ideas and inspiration from fellow Toastmasters so he can continue improving his speaking skills.

That mindset is what makes him such an inspiration.
Not because he thinks he has mastered everything, but because he’s always willing to keep learning and getting better.

Choice → Commitment → Confidence.

Definitely a message worth taking with us beyond the Toastmasters meeting. 👏

🏆 Celebrating Our Members at the District 30 Awards & Recognition Event!

This past Saturday, August 8, several members of our club attended the District 30 Awards & Recognition event, and we couldn’t be more proud to celebrate their accomplishments! 👏

Congratulations to:

⭐ Karl Frank& Stella Lorens — recognized for having Distinguished Areas

⭐Brian Shields — recognized for our club achieving President’s Distinguished Club status, as well as for his work as the District Administrative Manager while District 30 achieved Distinguished status

⭐ Mary Mattran — recognized for serving as a mentor to a new Toastmasters club

⭐ Stella Lorens — We want to recognize the incredible work she continues to do for District 30, including her efforts to bring District 30 and District 103 back together. Stella was also honored with a Lifetime Achievement Award last year!

What makes us especially proud is seeing our members not only grow as speakers and leaders within our club, but also give their time, energy, and leadership to the larger Toastmasters community.

Congratulations to all of our members! Your dedication makes our club—and District 30—stronger. 🎉👏

Rick gave us a speech at our last meeting that gave us a glimpse into a side of his life that many of us didn’t know about.

He shared his experience as a Bus Aide, explaining what the role involves on school buses and, more importantly, why he became one - and why he continues to do it.

Through his work, Rick interacts with children who need special assistance and supports them through all kinds of situations. Hearing about the relationships he has built and the impact he gets to have made this a truly heartwarming story. ❤️

And now we know Rick has another nickname…

“Sticker Man”! 😄⭐️

You’ll have to ask Rick yourself to find out how he earned that name!

It was a wonderful reminder that sometimes there’s a whole story behind the person sitting next to you that you never knew about.

Lilian has been a Toastmaster since she lived abroad, and this time she took us along on a journey to Yunnan, China, which she visited with her family earlier this year.

Through her stories, we got to experience the beauty of Yunnan - from stunning lakes and ancient villages to breathtaking mountains.
It truly sounds like a place that has it all!

But what makes Yunnan especially fascinating is its incredible diversity. Different cultures, traditions, and communities come together, creating so many opportunities for cultural exchange.

And of course, Lilian talked about the food! 🍜
The cuisine is just as diverse, including Yunnan’s iconic Crossing-the-Bridge Noodles.

Beautiful scenery, fascinating culture, and amazing food…

At our last meeting, we had the pleasure of hearing from Eric Feinengeden, a Distinguished Toastmaster and TEDx speaker, who gave us a very timely talk about growing and protecting our wealth by being aware of financial scams!

And here’s the part that got everyone’s attention…

Eric got scammed himself. Yes, HIM! 😳

He was was offered one by someone who appeared to be a longtime friend.

The problem? It wasn’t actually his friend.

His biggest takeaway for us was that the illusion is what makes scams so dangerous. Scammers don’t always look like scammers. They create familiarity, trust, and urgency—and that’s what gets us.

Eric then walked us through practical ways to stay SAFE from financial fraud, and we all walked away with some great reminders about protecting not only our money, but also our trust and judgment.

A great speech, a few eye-opening lessons, and definitely a reminder to pause and verify before we trust. 👀
