In the middle of the Battle of Monmouth, a cannonball tore through a woman's skirt. She looked down, said it was lucky it hadn't struck higher — and went back to working the gun.

We remember her as Molly Pitcher. But the truth is bigger than the legend: "Molly Pitcher" was never one woman. Most historians treat her as a symbol — a name we gave to the many women who followed the army, carried water to soldiers dying of heat, ran powder to the guns, and, when the men fell, worked the cannons themselves.

The one closest to the name was Mary Ludwig Hays, a barber's wife who marched with her husband's artillery company. The tidy story — that she stepped into his exact place when he was hit — is part legend; no contemporary account confirms the details. But one fact isn't legend: decades later, in 1822, the state of Pennsylvania granted Mary Hays a pension "for services rendered." A state paid a woman for what she did in that war.
