Monday, May 18th, 2026, @ 08:30 - Archuleta County:

There will be a temporary burn ban in effect for all open permitted burns within Archuleta County, effective immediately.

Due to the current conditions, particularly with the current wind event, we are shutting down the agricultural and permitted burn process for an abundance of safety.

We will continue to monitor the situation carefully, and reevaluate the process over the next few days. Our intent is to lift the temporary burn ban at the earliest possible convenience.

Friends of the Wild – Wildfire Update

Although there is currently no official fire ban in place, drought conditions in our area remain severe. Nothing is stopping each of us from choosing to be personally responsible and cautious.

Out of concern for our forests, wildlife, and community, Pagosa Springs Friends of the Wild does not recommend campfires, burn piles, or open flames at this time.

As always, if you choose to conduct a burn, please make sure you have the proper permit and notify County Dispatch at 970-731-2160.

Please help protect the land we all love by using extra care until moisture conditions improve.

In our first 3 weeks, we raised $3,400+ toward conservation — including $2,167 for the Land Acquisition Fund.

But here’s the part that matters:

The Land Acquisition Fund is how we permanently protect land in Pagosa Springs.
If we reach our goal, we plan to extend an offer to partner or purchase land in the Pagosa West area — keeping open space wild, connected, and undeveloped for generations.

This is not fast work.
It is generational work.

“Spirit of the Bear”

In the palm of Earth,
the Bear walks.
Mountains rise in his back,
rivers flow through his breath.

His claws carve stories
of the forest’s heart,
of trees that whisper
to the dawn and dark.

He is strength,
he is silence,
he is the guardian
of balance and birth.

Each step — a prayer,
each growl — a thunder,
each shadow —
a dream of the Mother.

🌲 Meet Tillard — and Help Us Keep Pagosa Wild! 🌲

Friends and neighbors,

Pagosa Springs is growing fast, and many of us want to protect the wildlife, open spaces, and dark skies that make this our home. Out of those community conversations, something new has begun:

Pagosa Springs Friends of the Wild (PSFOTW) is now officially formed — and so is our mascot, Tillard the Pagosa Tree Farmer™!

Tillard reminds us that caring for the land starts small: one seed, one choice, one community. 🌱

After learning from the Rocky Mountain Elk Foundation about grant funding for migration corridor conservation, we reached out in writing to the Pagosa West developers, hoping to bridge recent conflict and explore a balanced path forward. If the owners are ever open to considering a conservation option, we want our community to be part of that conversation.

To prepare, we’re launching A Thousand From Eight Thousand, an effort to build a conservation fund that would support a proposal to purchase specific parcels for permanent protection.

Our hope?

A Nature Park and Dark Sky Open Space where wildlife can move safely and families can enjoy accessible peaceful trails for generations to come.
