After learning that they are pregnancy with a little one that may not survive long after birth, families are faced with a choice. Often families are offered an immediate induction, but some families desire to stay pregnant. These families are so brave, and don't have a support group yet. Some families that have been there, and are in a unique situation to reach out with their hearts and support th
ese. We are apart of something larger, and how lovely to be able to offer a gift back to others... Let's walk beside them and encourage them in the way we've learned is helpful. Send a message to see how you can get involved. Leaves in Time recognizes the fleeting moments families face from the time a family receives the diagnosis, to the birth, and all to quickly, to the death of the precious little one. We only get to meet them for a moment before saying goodbye...
We want to help encourage the families by providing strategies that have been shown by research to help immensely with the grief process. We can encourage families to see a counselor, stay connected with their friend circles/church, write in a journal before and after birth, connect with others in the same situation, etc). There are still some ways to be in control of the birth too- get some help making a birth plan, etc. We try to capture the limited time available with the little ones by encouraging a variety of memory making activities before, during, and after birth (make a baby blanket while pregnant, get recording of baby's heartbeat at prenatal visit, collect a lock of hair at birth, pregnancy and/or birth pictures, hand/foot molds/prints at birth, and so much more). Vision
Our 5 year vision is to establish a birth center specializing in care for families knowing they will lose their baby soon after birth. There will be a lodge for the family to stay in during the month prior to birth, receiving prenatal care, but also specialized grieving guidance prior to birth. During birth the family will receive low intervention midwifery modeled care from nurses, CNM midwives, and a care team trained in loss and offering a very sensitive approach to the birth/death process. Postpartum moms will receive excellent medical care coupled with the caring and intuitive touches due a family that just lost their little one. There are many optional remembrance activities available to families, including birth photography, hand/feet moldings, hand/feet prints, fingerprint necklaces, etc. Local funeral arrangements can be discussed. The mom and family will be encouraged to stay at the lodging for a minimum of one week postpartum before returning home. This time will be appropriately filled with space to grieve as well as support as the reality sets in.
