It's been a year since the floods in our town. We saw so many incredible acts of kindness, generosity and love that we've been reflecting on today, and we wanted to share.

We started a little page to help the locals find their way around the blocked roads and share resources that were popping up around town.
We were quickly inundated with donation offers and requests for help. We worked for six days straight as we quickly organized, built a massive spreadsheet, volunteer lists, answered aid requests, and threw together a website to try and keep up. We kept a massive list of volunteers asking to help and sharing their resources. We connected donors with oranizations who could accept their gifts. This group started out as a family project, but quickly became a massive machine of volunteers and community members.

We sorted trucks, volunteer cleanup crews, offers of assistance, water and food donations; we helped people find showers and places to stay. We mucked out basements, hauled away debris, and rebuilt homes, businesses and yards. We consoled each other, set up support groups, and offered whatever we could to help ease the suffering of our community. We guided folks through the aftermath and advocated for them at the local, federal, and state levels.
So many good deeds were done quietly and without acknowledgement or reward. We saw you, we appreciate you, and we thank you on behalf of everyone who benefited from your compassion.

We picked this name because so many neighbors came to us asking for help for their neighbors. They asked for help when they knew their friends and family wouldn't ask for it themselves. We did our best to be what neighbors should be for each other in a time of crisis, and this "Neighbors for Neighbors" model went on to help folks in the 2024 Florida hurricanes and the California wildfires.
We sincerely hope that we won't have to experience that much destruction and tragedy again, but we know we will be there for our community if we do.

Thank you for being here with us when we needed each other the most!g

Oxford, Naugatuck & Seymour Southbury residents- please consider writing to your state legislators and remind them our communities still need support after the August 2024 flood.

Urge our lawmakers to advocate to use a portion of our state surplus for a grant program for our residents and businesses that are still dealing with the damage and financial impact of the disaster.

Municipalities are waiting for FEMA reimbursements. Homeowners and businesses survived on the kindness of community and loans, with very small portions of aid from FEMA in some cases.

We’ve provided a copy/paste template of a letter in the comments below.
