Today's veterans face numerous obstacles in their path of attaining a college degree. These challenges range from a missing sense of camaraderie to feeling like an outsider amongst 18 year old traditional students to a lack of understanding by university faculty. When coupled with the visible and invisible wounds of war, a college degree can be an elusive goal for men and women returning from mili

tary service. Student Veterans of America (SVA) makes that goal a reality. The purpose of the Student Veterans Association (SVA) at Miami University is to provide a network of support to military veterans, their families and civilian supporters; secondly, to work with the university administration to meet the needs of student veterans and prospective student veterans; thirdly, to cultivate student veterans concerns through scheduled meetings, advocacy, social and recreational activities; fourthly, to foster esprit de corps among student veterans and promote an understanding of student veterans issues. Finally, to provide a resource for new and prospective student veterans to ease the transition into student life through the knowledge and experience gained from those that have come before.

BLUF: 04 Jan 2018, 1100, Oxford, Armstrong Student Center, community lounge (2nd floor)
Who: All
Why: Get paid on time, get Oxford Veterans Services

Good afternoon all. With the coming end of the semester, we also have a coming break from school. As some probably know, the main campus lacks a Vet Representative, while the branch campuses have JP Smith, 1st Sgt (Ret) as a central POC.

On January 4th, 1100, Oxford Campus, there’s going to be a meeting with JP about issues and policies that are preventing vets from being paid on time, and how the branch campuses came about to have Veteran Services. The ultimate goal of this is to make sure we don’t have problems with getting paid, but also to start pushing buttons to get a Veteran Services office/representative on main campus to work our issues while we are in class.

This is an open invitation to all to attend. We’re aware that it is during break, but the hope is with the break there will be minimal road bumps for people to attend. The more that attend, the more questions can be asked and answered, and the better overall picture we can have on helping each other out and what steps need to be taken to get vet representation on main campus.

Please reply to [email protected] if you will be able to attend, if you’re willing to drive others, and if you would like to carpool.

For the past several years, Talawanda High School has had a free breakfast for veterans and their families in honor of our day, and this year they’re hosting again. Last year a steel band played during breakfast, we connected with vets from all eras, local police, and at the end the school principle pulled the school together to help the youngest, most impressionable members of our society understand who vets are, and what we’ve done for them.

It’s a great way to meet new people who have something in common, and start the day in a bit of a different way than normal. Plus the free food is pretty decent.

THS is on US 27 just outside town, and below is the contact information for RSVPing for the event.

If you know of anybody that is deployed and would like a few things, please send it along to me and I’ll get it out to everyone. I’ll start:

My friend and neighbor is deployed in Qatar, and while he has always enjoyed working out, it means a lot to him right now. 2 weeks before his deployment his son was born, and he went out planning on using exercise as a means to distract himself from home during the day.

He trains 6-7 people doing the whole Crossfit gig, with no real support infrastructure and would like to make things better than when he found them. Base support hasn’t been there, so he’s trying to do it directly. Essentially, he wants to expand the pallet-built dip station and other rigged equipment out.

We are raising funds for our box Crossfit Undisclosed. This is a deployed location for all branches of the United States military, as well as for coalition/friendly forces. Hundreds of men and women come through here and are united in this community. For some of us, this has become our home away from home. And this has also become our family away from our family.
We are in need of new equipment and upgrades, but we are a not-for profit affiliate so we are dependent on donations for all equipment and volunteers for coaching, programming, etc.
Please join us by donating gear, equipment, funds and/or spreading the word about our cause. If you have any questions please let me know. Thank you so much for being part of our community!

President Trump has just put his signature on a new law that will bring significant changes to education benefits for service members, veterans and their families.
