Meet R.J. - one of our 2026 Sanctuary Artists!
R.J. Lee a native of Natchez, Mississippi, and a graduate of Sewanee (The University of the South) in English and Creative Writing, this novelist and acrylic artist spent the first 22 years of his life in Natchez, where he developed a great admiration for architecture and natural beauty. He has spent the last 21 years living in Oxford, Mississippi, the vibrant community where the majority of his 18 novels were written and published. Over the years, his creative work has also been featured in various art exhibits at the Powerhouse, City Grocery, and other local venues.
While trained in oil on canvas, his current medium of choice is acrylic on framed corkboard, an acid-free substrate. His subject matter remains eclectic, ranging from landscapes and animals to various weather formations and unexpected juxtapositions of objects. Today, his diverse artwork and prolific writing continue to reflect the landscapes, spirit, and timeless character of the Mississippi places that have shaped his life.
