Participating in Girls in Aviation Day gave EAA Chapter 1707 an opportunity to share some of what we know: aircraft building, tools, weight and balance, and Young Eagles. Watching young people encounter some of these things for the first time was a good reminder of why these experiences matter.
But the day offered something else as well.
Being surrounded by people from across the world of flight, including NASA Flight Director Chloe, aka “Lion Flight,” was a reminder that aviation can take us well beyond the reaches of our own world.
For a small rural community, many of those people, careers, and opportunities can seem light-years away. Perhaps part of our role is simply to help shorten that distance, making introductions, sharing resources, and creating opportunities for our kids to see where their interests might take them. Sometimes all it takes is the right point of contact to set someone on a new trajectory.
Keep participating. Keep meeting people. Keep making connections. And whenever possible, bring those connections within reach of our kids.
In aviation we have a saying: Aviate. Navigate. Communicate.
We spend a lot of time on the first two.
Maybe we should lean a little harder on Communicate.
You never know who you'll meet or where that conversation might lead.
