A few nights ago, severe storms swept through our region, leaving widespread damage and leaving many communities, particularly northeast Kansas City, Kansas, dealing with severe property damage and mass power outages. Fortunately, an incredible grassroots effort is already underway to help our neighbors get back on their feet, and we want to do everything we can to amplify it.

Here's the update from the ground: We will coordinate volunteers today from 10am until 7pm at The Village Initiative (3004 N 27th St. KCK). The form is for volunteers to sign up to help Northeast KCK with post-storm relief efforts. Call (913) 563-8700, Nikki Richardson with any questions or feedback. Back to school season is upon us, and with it, we have an important reminder. The cost of protecting your family and community is priceless. But the financial impact of a vaccine-preventable disease like whooping cough can be devastating. Take a look at and share this graphic, which breaks down the potential $39,240+ costs associated with whooping cough, including hospital care, lost income, and other expenses, against the benefit of an often free or low-cost Tdap vaccine.

As people of faith and conscience, we are called to protect the most vulnerable among us and be good stewards of all that has been entrusted to us, including our health and the health of our neighbors. Getting vaccinated is one of the most tangible ways we have to live out this call to love and serve our community. Thank God for public servants who prioritize public health, evidence, and the well-being of our communities over political pressures.

We are deeply grateful to see that, per reporting by the Kansas Reflector, scientific evidence and care for our children’s health stand firm for now. While we remain vigilant knowing challenges may lie ahead when the legislative session arrives, today we give thanks for leaders standing up for the common good.
