Ottawa Lion’s funnel cake booth at the Franklin County Fair was a success. It is not an easy way to earn money to give back to the community but it is a satisfying venture. Thank you to all who helped at the booth. To members and community volunteers, thanks for your involvement. Those funnel cakes this year were beautiful as well as tasty.

The Ottawa Lions Club has been busy this month! 680 Pre-Kindergarten, Kindergarten, First, Third and Fifth grade students at Sunflower, Garfield and Lincoln Elementary Schools participated in the Lions Club's vision screening events, which utilized a Welch Allyn Spot Screener. This device rapidly detects potential indications for six common vision problems: near and far sightedness, astigmatism, unequal refractive power, eye misalignment and unequal pupil size. Of the students screened, 64 total (26 under 6 years of age) were referred to an optometrist for a professional eye examination. Many thanks to the school nurses, teachers and aids that assisted us in providing this service for our community!
Please consider joining the local Lions Club as we strive to make Franklin County an even better place to live!

The speaker for the June 27 meeting, held at Prime Time Grill, was Leigh Hanson of the United Way. An interesting and informative session broadened our knowledge of the many things that the United Way does to help others in our community. Take a moment to find out more and support them in ways that you can.

This was the meeting where the new slate of officers take the helm of the club.

Our next activity will be the funnel cake fundraiser at the Franklin County Fair. Please support the service activities of the local Lions Club by stopping by the booth to visit (and to buy a funnel cake or two)!

Debbie Tegethoff of KSDS Assistance Dogs Inc. met with our club today to report on their work. Located in Washington, Kansas, their mission is to provide professionally trained guide, service and facility dogs for people in need of a canine partner to enhance their independence, to fully function in society. Established in 1990, they place service dogs at no cost, have placed over 600 teams in 36 states, relying on contributions from individuals, corporations, service clubs and estates. Ottawa Lions contributed $500 to them in support of their efforts! Please support your local Lions Club in July by buying a funnel cake at the fair so we can continue serving others in this and other ways. Please consider joining us in this effort!

Ottawa Public Elementary Schools vision screenings were performed this week where 326 students were screened at Sunflower, Garfield and Lincoln Schools, as directed by the school nurses. The instrument utilized is a Welch Allyn Spot Screener that rapidly detects potential indications for six common vision problems: near and far sightedness, astigmatism, unequal refractive power, eye misalignment and unequal pupil size. Of the students screened, 31 were recommended to be referred to a vision professional. The members of the local Lions Club are pleased to be able to offer this service free of charge. This week's club meeting at Prime-Time Grill featured 1st Vice Governor of District 17N, Pam Bilyeu. She gave an encouraging report of membership growth in the district. She also suggested the possibility of the District Convention being held in Ottawa in April 2023. It would be some work but would be good for Ottawa and Franklin County! We will be discussing the item further at our next meeting, October 11, at noon at Smoked Creations. Please come and offer your thoughts!

President Pat Pickett is shown presenting Dr. Kathy Ammel with her 15 year membership pin. Thank you, Kathy for your continuing service and work in promoting the goals of Lions Clubs International.

Please consider suggesting new individuals for membership in the world's largest service club!
