What Is a Robert Burns Dinner?
A Robert Burns Dinner (often called a Burns Night Supper) is a traditional Scottish celebration held in honor of Scotland’s national poet. It is equal parts meal, ceremony, and storytelling, blending food, poetry, music, and good fellowship.
--------
A typical Burns Dinner includes:
A formal presentation of the haggis, often accompanied by a short address
Traditional Scottish fare such as beef, potatoes, and haggis
Readings of poetry or short toasts
A relaxed, social atmosphere meant to celebrate heritage, language, and camaraderie
While some Burns suppers are very formal, many modern events—especially club dinners—keep things light-hearted and accessible, focusing on tradition without pretense.

Who Was Robert Burns?
Robert Burns (1759–1796) is widely regarded as Scotland’s national poet and one of the most influential figures in Scottish history and culture. He wrote poetry and songs in both Scots and English, celebrating everyday people, rural life, friendship, humor, and social equality.
Many of his works remain well known today, including:
Auld Lang Syne
To a Mouse
Address to a Haggis
Burns was known for speaking plainly, valuing common sense, and challenging social class distinctions—qualities that made his work resonate far beyond Scotland. Burns Night celebrations around the world reflect those same values: community, respect for tradition, and enjoying good food and company together.
Hope to see you there!
