⭐️Fun Fact Friday: Striped Skunks!⭐️

Did you know that striped skunks are much more than their famous smell?

🦨Their bold black-and-white coloring serves as a warning to predators to stay away.

🦨 Before spraying, a skunk gives several warning signs, including stomping its feet, raising its tail, and turning its back toward a threat.
(Our skunks, “Ollie and Otis” have their scent glands removed and can’t spray!)

🦨 Striped skunks are mostly nocturnal, meaning they are most active at night while searching for insects, berries, small animals, and other tasty treats. ( Our skunk duo, love to eat!)

🦨 A skunk’s sense of smell is excellent, helping it locate food even in the dark, however their eyesight is not as good.

🦨 Despite their reputation, skunks would rather avoid trouble than spray.

Our “zoo crew” rolled up their sleeves at Menominee Park Zoo kids camp today and got a hands-on look at what it takes to care for animals!

Campers learned all about animal husbandry while helping bathe our tortoises and hedgehogs, and even prepared salads topped with crickets for our hungry tortoises.

The hard work continued in the alpaca habitat, where campers helped rake up poo, provide fresh hay, clean and refill the water trough, and of course, sneak in a few alpaca pets along the way!

Way to go “zoo crew”!
