Jacob LaMontagne, First-year

"Music has been part of my life ever since I can remember. I grew up listening to all sorts of music—most of which was from my dad who is a percussionist. He grew up in a musical household where both his parents and all 5 kids played an instrument or sang. Hopefully someday I can pass it onto my children. For me it wasn’t until high school until I figured out how important music was in my life. It started becoming part of my daily routine. The first thing I’d listen to in the morning, and the last thing I’d hear at night was music. When I can’t be around it, I feel lost, and I feel like a part of me is missing. Music has given me a way to apply my organization, leadership, and teaching skills all in one element. It has also given me the opportunity to broaden my understanding of education. Combining these two areas—music, and teaching, has made me realize that I’ve found my calling in life. I wake up every single day feeling so lucky to have such a gift. It’s one of the few things in life that I can share and enjoy with every single person. Music touches everybody in some way, shape, or form. It has such strong healing and emotional powers unlike anything in the world. Music allows me to destress when I’m worked up, let’s me focus on goals and daily improvement, and perfect my strengths as an individual. I truly am lost without music. As a future teacher, I can’t wait to share my love and passion of music with students who also feel the same way! "

Emily Dunlap, First-year

"Music has affected my life for many reasons. It has always been there for me no matter what, and I have met the amazing people through music. Now that I am a music education major, I want to empower those to keep their music career going, even if it is 'just a hobby.'"

Katie Spagnolo, Junior

"I had a very abnormal childhood that kicked off with a tragedy. Music was the first medium which helped me understand what I felt, and helped me release it. Music was the first place I could go to escape. I used to play "singer" growing up. I would stare at myself in the very reflective windows of the empty house across from mine, and sing Miley Cyrus' "The Climb" like no one else on my street could see, or hear me. Singing was something I did for myself, not only because it was entertaining, but because it was soothing. It was therapy. My ability to sing made me feel special. It gave me another reason to be unique outside of my circumstances. However, it was through the influence of various, wonderful music educators in my schools that really transformed my life. I went from feeling like I stuck out, to feeling like I stood out. I went from feeling out of place, to feeling like I had a place. I found my pride, I found my spirit, and I found my drive within the various band and chorus rooms of my schools. What started as therapy turned into motivation, all because one teacher took notice. Music Matters. Especially in our schools. If it didn't have a place in my schools, I never would have found my purpose."

Megan Howell, Junior

"Music has been a part of my life for as long as I can remember. Even before I started school, I sang with my grandmother, played the recorder in the backyard with my grandfather, and lay on the floor of my room for hours with my dad as he helped me plunk out "Yankee Doodle" on the keyboard. When I started school, my love of music only grew - I began the violin when I was seven, the flute when I was nine, joined our chorus when I was ten, and it all snowballed from there. I’m now in my third year at UMaine, play more than ten instruments, and am working on a double major in Music Education and Flute Performance. I could not be happier. In my time here, I have been a part of the symphonic band, University Singers, UMaine Renaissance, the orchestra, the concert band, the pep band, chamber ensembles, jazz combos - the list is endless. Music has taught me things about myself, and the world, that I never could have learned on my own. It has showed me what it means to be a team player, while reminding me that I am my own biggest competitor. It has given me a place, free of judgement, to feel and express my emotions. Because of music, I am brave, strong, and fearless. Music is truly a lifelong endeavor, and I feel so lucky to know that, 13+ years in, I am just getting started."

Vicky Williams, First-year

"I've always had a love for music. It has been one of the few consistent things in my life that I've never really moved away from. When I was little I used to play singer in my Hannah Montana wig and think that I was the absolute best musician to ever exist (I definitely was not). Once I got into elementary and middle school I began to learn music in a more formal sense. For years, I only played the flute in my school band. I loved that and I was involved in any way possible. However, when I got to the 8th grade I joined choir and really flourished in that type of environment. Now I am a music education major with a concentration in vocal music, and I am looking forward to having music be a prevalent part of my life for the rest of my life."

Reilly Hesseltine, Junior

"Music is a universal language. It is something that can connect so many people and touch them, sometimes without them even acknowledging it. Music is something that is there to comfort you when you are down, but also will be there for you to help celebrate your highs. To me, music is everything. There are no words that describe the way I feel when I play a piece that I love successfully. It’s simply pure happiness. In the fifth grade, I started learning percussion because I wanted to play the drums, but once I hit high school and was highly encouraged to play tuba by my band director, I fell in love with low brass. My music teachers have always encouraged me, and have had an immense impact on who I am today, both as a person and musician. Music has taught me to be confident in myself and believe that I can achieve great things. It has also brought so many great people into my life that I can consider family. Here at UMaine I have been a part of the Symphonic Band, Marching Band, Pep Band, Concert Band, Brass Ensemble, Jazz Ensemble, Collegiate Chorale, and Kappa Kappa Psi, National Honorary Band Service Fraternity. I am so grateful for music and truly don’t know where I’d be today without it."

Natalie Lisnet, Junior

"Music has never failed to make me happy. I have major performance anxiety and I constantly feel like I'm not the best musician, however I always enjoy playing in ensembles and bringing music to others. Music has allowed me to come out of my shell and meet new people–I've made lifelong friends because of music and I'm eternally grateful that I get the opportunities I wouldn't get in any other way. Music has taught me how to be more on top of things and have a better work ethic, but it's also just made me a better person."

Sam Bolvin, Sophomore

"I started playing music in 5th grade and picked saxophone because it was what all the “cool kids” wanted to play. Turns out I must have liked it because they all quit and I didn’t. I played music all through middle school and high school and Senior year I enlisted in the Maine National Guard as a musician. I currently serve in the 195th army band while pursuing a degree in Music Education here at UMaine. Music has always been a way for me to shut out everything going on in the world and just focus on one thing. Sometimes I wonder what I would do in a world without music, and it reminds me of all the positive benefits that music has given me. The amazing thing about music is that you can always be better and it’s truly a life long activity. One of my favorite aspects of music is that playing in an ensemble is a team effort. An ensemble works together to create the best music they can. Here at UMaine I’m part of the Symphonic Band, the Concert Band, The Pep Band, as well as the Marching Band. Each allows me to experience a different type of music and develop into a well-rounded musician."
