In Memory of Ray Martinez
It is with heavy hearts that we share the passing of a beloved member of the OGL community, Ray Martinez, known to many of us on Discord as TooRayToFunction.
Ray had a genuine passion for board games and tabletop gaming. Whether it was Ticket to Ride, Catan, Taco vs Burrito, or something entirely new, he loved bringing people together around the table. Alongside his brother Gary, Ray joined us for countless Tavern Brawls, Gathering Halls, Revival events, and other opportunities to roll dice, draw cards, laugh, and spend time with his fellow gaymers.
One of Ray's greatest gifts was his willingness to share the games he loved with others. He was always eager to teach someone something they had never played before, and he did so with remarkable patience and thoughtfulness. For Ray, it was never simply about knowing the rules or winning the game. He wanted to make sure everyone understood, felt included, and—most importantly—was having a good time.
That same warmth extended far beyond the tabletop.
Ray was an active presence in our Discord community, sharing pieces of his life with us—from making delicious tamales during Christmas, to introducing everyone to his new hamster, Mon-El, to celebrating the incredible achievement of graduating cm laude from Rollins College with his bachelor's degree. We were fortunate to celebrate those moments alongside him.
Ray was also a proud and active supporter of the LGBTQ+ community, including spaces that welcomed and celebrated the Bear community, such as Savoy and Barcodes. He showed up for his community, both online and in person, and his presence made those spaces brighter.
Ray was a staple of OGL and a light among his peers. His kindness, patience, humor, and enthusiasm brought people together. We are deeply saddened by his passing, and our hearts go out to Gary, Ray's family, his friends, and everyone whose life was made a little better by knowing him.
There will always be an empty seat at the table where Ray should be. He will be deeply missed, and fondly remembered, around ours.
