We love how creative our members are when it comes to engaging their communities!

El Día del Niño (Children's Day) is celebrated annually in Mexico on 30 April to honour children, recognise their importance to society, and promote their wellbeing.

Green Fins Member celebrated the day by engaging local children in ocean protection. The kids learned about reef conservation, went snorkelling, and enjoyed a group breakfast together.

Introducing children to the underwater world and teaching them why it matters is one of the most powerful ways to protect reefs long-term. When children grow up understanding the ocean, they become advocates for it.

Thank you for inspiring the next generation to protect Cozumel's reefs, Sand Dollar Sports!

During our "Making Waves: Citizen Science in Action" webinar, we were thrilled to bring together marine tourism operators, conservation practitioners, and ocean advocates from across the region to explore how citizen science can support meaningful marine conservation outcomes.

We heard powerful examples of how communities, dive operators, tourists, researchers, and local stakeholders can contribute valuable data that supports reef health monitoring, species protection, marine protected area management, and conservation action on the ground.

Across the session, one message stood out clearly: long-term ocean impact happens when we stop working alone and start working together.

We would like to thank our incredible guest speakers from Coral Triangle Center, Purple Dive Penida, and Blue Alliance Philippines for sharing their inspiring work and experiences from Indonesia and the Philippines.

Green Fins Digital Membership is a self-guided pathway that provides the guidance, tools, and support needed to follow the Green Fins Code of Conduct, regardless of location or access to assessor teams.

It's built on the same foundation as Certified Membership: the Green Environmental Assessment Rating System (GEARS), which uses a green-amber-red rating to identify and mitigate environmental risks. Digital Members receive a score out of 10, with higher scores indicating better environmental performance.

The structure is intentionally accessible. There's no minimum threshold to join – just a commitment to continuous improvement. Operators choose four solutions from the library, build a personalised action plan, and implement it over 12 months. Progress is tracked, and support is available through the Community Forum.

Digital Membership meets operators where they are and helps them move forward. Whether you're in Fiji or Finland, the Maldives or Mexico, sustainable diving is accessible.

Our members make a difference for the reefs they depend on throughout the year. Many of them organise monthly or even weekly cleanup days, making an effort to involve their local communities to build awareness and shared responsibility for ocean protection.

Here are some Green Fins Members around the world who have cleaned up their surroundings in the past month, preventing rubbish from entering the ocean:

A huge win for global marine conservation: TIME recognised PADI as one of ten Most Influential Sustainability Companies of 2026!

Through conservation programmes, citizen science initiatives, and influencing sustainable dive tourism development worldwide, PADI is proving that the dive industry can be a powerful driver of ocean protection. We're especially proud of this recognition because it reinforces something we've worked on together for years: making sustainable diving the norm, not the exception.

One of the requirements to become a PADI Eco Center is being a Green Fins Member. This connection means that dive centres committed to PADI's highest environmental standards are also implementing Green Fins' internationally recognised guidelines for reducing environmental impacts from marine tourism.

When organisations like PADI set the bar high and integrate Green Fins standards into their operations, it creates systemic change across the industry. This is how sustainable diving becomes the global norm: when the world's largest dive training organisation and the leading environmental standard for marine tourism work together to raise expectations across the board.

This is not just a win for PADI, this is a win for everyone advocating for sustainable dive tourism and ocean conservation.

Meet Maple Leaf Scuba, a thriving dive centre in Cozumel, Mexico, with a strong focus on sustainability and female empowerment.

Glenda and her team are leading the way in implementing eco-friendly marine tourism in the Yucatán region. Since joining Green Fins, they've fully embraced practical changes that reduce their environmental footprint.

"Our staff are all highly engaged and love the initiatives", Glenda shares. "We require all new staff to watch the Green Fins Guide video as part of their orientation. They are super excited to participate in the Dive Against Debris monthly event. They also include Green Fins as part of their briefing and encourage good buoyancy." But that's just the beginning. Swipe through to read more about Maple Leaf Scuba's eco-friendly initiatives and how they're making sustainability part of their everyday operations

Green Fins membership is a journey, not a test. We steer away from a pass/fail mindset and focus on progress and community-led accountability instead.

Our assessments aren't just tick-box exercises. Assessors have in-depth discussions with multiple staff members (not just managers) and are trained to tell the difference between putting on a show and implementing effective long-term policies within a business.

It's a collaborative approach based on transparency. Assessors and dive centres work together to improve. It's also a two-way information exchange; assessors benefit from hearing dive centres' concerns and experiences with implementing sustainability policies.

We also have tiered membership levels. Gold Members and Best Environmental Performers are top-rated and have been involved in Green Fins for multiple years to reach that level. Bronze Members are just starting out but have the intention to do better. We work closely with all Members to support them on their journey.

Out of 356 active Members, only 3 have a 'perfect' score, meaning they have the lowest environmental impact as demonstrated by assessments conducted within the last 18 months across 75 diving hotspots in 15 countries. These Members have been actively engaged in conservation for many years, reaching that point by gradually improving over time.

Yesterday, we shared why we prioritise progress over perfection. Head over to The Reef-World Foundation to find their latest post!

UNEP has published guidance on how travellers can protect coral reefs on holiday, and we're proud to see Green Fins featured as a key solution.

The article highlights five ways tourists can minimise their impact on reefs, including choosing dive and snorkel operators that follow Green Fins standards. describes Green Fins as "the only internationally recognised environmental standard for marine tourism" – a recognition that reflects two decades of work with dive operators worldwide to measurably reduce environmental impacts.

The piece also links directly to Green Fins resources, including our coral bleaching response toolkit, reef-safe sunscreen guidance, and cleanup guidelines; practical tools that empower both tourists and operators to protect the reefs they love.

What stands out in UNEP's article is the emphasis on everyday choices. Where you book your dive trip, which sunscreen you use, how you behave underwater. All of it matters! And when millions of people make small adjustments, the cumulative impact on reefs is significant.

This is exactly what Green Fins was designed to address: turning individual awareness into industry-wide standards and instigating systemic change across the marine tourism sector. When enough operators commit to environmental standards and enough tourists choose responsible businesses, these best practices become the norm, shifting entire markets, and influencing policy. UNEP's recognition of this work reinforces something we've known for years: marine tourism doesn't have to damage reefs.

Green Fins Member Bunaken Oasis Dive Resort is back with another inspiring initiative: their Coral Conservation Project.

In February, dive guide trainees planted 80–100 Acropora coral fragments on a restored steel-frame nursery in the resort's lagoon as part of their 2025 Dive Guide Trainee programme. The structure had been abandoned but was still structurally sound, so the team revitalised it to support reef recovery.

Six weeks later, the results are positive. Three monitoring sessions have shown strong fragment attachment, minimal mortality, healthy colouration, and well-managed algae presence. The corals are adapting successfully.

This project is a win-win: it restores reef cover and shapes the next generation of dive professionals. Trainees are gaining hands-on experience in coral ecology, restoration techniques, and monitoring methods, preparing them to become conservation ambassadors.

Expected outcomes include increased coral cover within 6–12 months, improved fish habitat, and baseline data for future research. The initiative also creates opportunities for guest engagement and potential collaborations with NGOs and research institutions.

We're proud to have Bunaken Oasis as part of the Green Fins family, and we can't wait to see how this project develops!
