Poodle and Pooch Rescue of Florida A Rescue Based in Central Florida Saving Dogs in Need Poodle and Pooch Rescue is a 501(c)3 non profit organization that saves dogs that truly need help.
(460)

We rescue the "leftovers" from animal control, the dogs nobody wants because they're older or suffer from neglect, abuse or have a medical need. Their "last" day becomes the first day of their new life. We provide the veterinary care they need, a foster family they love and when they're ready, we adopt them to a family who cherishes them. We are all volunteers so your tax-deductible donation goes

directly to help the dogs. We have saved over 5,200 dogs since 2008. Please help us save even more with a donation marked "Special Needs". Our greatest need is for donations for our Special Needs dogs who are listed on the "Save a Dog" page on our website at www.PPRFL.org.

Shhh… Lindsay, one half of our media team, doesn’t know we’re posting this. 🤫

Happy 5-Year Adoptaversary!

Five years ago, we took in 30+ dogs from a backyard breeder. I (the mysterious other half of the media team) was there to document and share the intake with all of you. I will never forget just how quiet that day was.

Normally, when you have a van full of crated dogs, not only does the smell knock you off your feet, but it’s loud.

These dogs were so neglected and traumatized they were silent. Absolutely silent. They all just laid in their crates, barely reacting to us at all.

Polly was one of those pups. And with the love and support of her foster-turned adopter and media’s more talented half, Lindsay, Polly has gone from a shut-down pup to a confident queen! 👑

Polly has graduated from multiple classes at Beyond The Leash, even earning her Good Canine Citizen certification. Polly also serves as PPR’s Head Girl Scout Liaison.

Happy five years, Lindsay and Polly!

May you have many more happy and confident years together. It’s been an honor to watch you both grow. 🥂

Next stop: foster homes! 🏠

Earlier this week, we took in 17 dogs from an ever larger intake in Lake County, where 85 dogs were rescued from one property.

After the dogs complete their initial vet exams, they’re heading home with one of our foster volunteers to decompress and continue their journey towards healing. Here’s a peek at one of the first pups, Syrax, heading home with our volunteer, Julie.

We still have dogs in need of foster homes. If you’d like to help out, please visit our website at PPRFL.org to submit a foster application and a volunteer will be in touch.

You can also donate towards the dogs’ vetting expenses:

Adopt Bandit! He’s a 3-year-old, 17-pound Parson Russell Terrier blend.

Favorite Things: Bandit has a long list of favorite things! TOYS ? Nothing pleases him more than tearing a toy apart to find the beloved squeaker. A game of Tug-of-War and fetch? Sign him up. He also loves being with people and showering them with kisses, especially on their face. He also loves to nibble his human’s ears.

Training & Manners: Bandit is housetrained in his foster home, and his foster mom says he essentially “pees on command” when outdoors. He walks well on a leash and tolerates a car ride. He is VERY smart and responds well to commands. Additional training and working on basic manners should be a breeze (and lots of fun) with this intelligent guy who is food/treat motivated. He can be a bit of a finicky eater.

Health & Care: Bandit is neutered, up to date on vaccines and microchipped. He came into PPR’s care with a broken leg that continues to heal without surgery. He does still favor that leg a little, but it definitely has not slowed him (or his enthusiasm) down one bit. He may need continued medication for inflammation (he takes medications like a champ), but other than that, he’s a healthy, resilient guy. He should be low maintenance, and the occasional bath and nail trim should keep him looking like the dapper guy he is.

Other Animals: Bandit has not been around other dogs while in PPR’s care, so we are not able to determine how he would do with them. His personality would suggest he would be fine. Of course, if he’s the only dog, he would be fine with all the attention. A Meet & Greet would be necessary with the approved adopter if they have other dogs. He has not been tested with cats, but his foster thinks he would likely be fine with a feline friend.

Children: Bandit has not been around children since in our care. Again, based on his LOVE for people, we expect he would do well with older children/teens.

Ideal Home: Bandit’s forever home will need to be a single-family home with a fenced yard. He is very active and loves to run. He’s like the Energizer Bunny at times! He goes on five walks a day in his foster home and is still ready for a game of fetch. He has recently discovered his “voice” too so shared walls wouldn’t be ideal. Bandit does well in his secure area when left alone at home and can go for several hours without issues. He loves to be up on furniture but will get down when asked. But he firmly believes that rule expires quickly.

Overall: Bandit is an adventurous, athletic, communicative and confident guy looking to find his forever home. Could that be with you? If you think he might be the one, please visit www.pprfl.org to fill out an adoption application and our team will be in touch.

***Local adoption only: Tux needs to be adopted by a family in the Central Florida region (Orlando area) who will commit to taking him to his follow-up vetting appointments for remaining vaccines and neuter with PPR's vetting partner. These appointments will be scheduled through PPR, and the cost is included in his adoption donation.

Adopt Tux! He’s a 5‑month‑old, 35‑pound Standard Poodle puppy already dressed for every occasion.

Favorite Things: Tux is an all‑in kind of puppy who throws his whole heart into whatever he’s doing. He loves his toys and delights in carrying them around as if he’s showing off prized treasures. He enjoys playful bursts in the yard, settling in close for affection, and finding joy in every little moment.

Training and Manners: Tux is housetrained when let out regularly and does a nice job signaling when he needs to go outside. He sleeps comfortably in either his dog bed or the people bed. He walks well on a leash, enjoys car rides, and has a good foundation of basic manners. He’s still learning, but he approaches new skills with eager confidence, and continued guidance will help him feel even more secure as he grows.

Health and Care: Tux is a healthy puppy and up to date on his current vaccines. He will just need monthly flea and heartworm preventatives, like any dog. As a Standard Poodle, he requires regular brushing and professional grooming to keep his coat healthy and looking its best. He will need his remaining vaccines and neuter when he reaches the appropriate age. These services are included in his adoption donation and will be completed at one of our partnering veterinarians in Central FL.

Other Animals: Tux enjoys the company of other dogs and greets them with easy, friendly interest. He may bark at first, but once he gets close, he relaxes quickly and settles into comfortable play. His social nature makes him a good match for homes with well‑mannered dogs who appreciate puppy energy. He does not have experience with cats.

Children: Tux is best suited for homes with older children (8+) who understand how to interact with a young, energetic puppy.

Ideal Home: Tux would do best in a single‑family home, as he can be vocal when left alone and may feel overwhelmed in shared‑wall settings. A fenced yard would be a great bonus for his bursts of puppy energy. He’s still growing and learning, so a family with patience, consistency, and time for training will help him thrive. He’s treat‑motivated, eager to learn, and happiest with plenty of companionship throughout the day.

Overall: Tux is a bright, affectionate young poodle who brings charm wherever he goes. He’s more than ready to add a little tuxedo‑style flair to a family who enjoys a lively companion. If you’ve been hoping for a pup who looks dressed for the occasion and treats every day like an adventure, Tux may be the perfect guy for you. To apply, visit www.pprfl.org; if it’s a good match, his foster family will be in touch.

Yesterday, we took in 17 dogs from an even larger intake done by Lake County Animal Services. They took possession of 85 dogs, all from one property.

These pups are sweet but so, so scared. They are all underweight with muscle atrophy and some can hardly stand. At least one is totally blind. She’s an older gal whose teeth were ground down to the gums, likely from chewing on her cage or eating rocks.

They have skin issues to treat, ear infections, eye infections, worms, fleas, possible heartworm, and they need a healthy diet and supplements along with slow and steady exercise to build up their muscle mass. Most will need dentals when they are healthy enough and all will need to be spayed or neutered.

If you’d like to help start these pups off on their journey to a forever home, here is how you can help:

💵 Donate - our initial estimate for their vetting is just under $8,000
🏠 Foster - all 17 will need homes where they can decompress, heal, and find out who they were always meant to be.
💬 Share - maybe someone you know can foster or would like to donate. And, every interaction with this post helps it find more people.

🐾 Courtesy Post - if you have questions or would like to adopt, please contact Josie Colon directly at 386-697-2026. The cats are not in our care.

Peanut (female) and Peeve (male) are 5-year-old littermates. Peeve has a little extra pep in his step with six toes on his paws, making him a Hemingway cat.

Both kittehs are excellent cuddlers, and Peanut likes to sleep as close to you as possible at night. They are dog friendly and even bunny friendly, too. They love to cuddle and will gladly offer you a free bath every day.

Peanut and Peeve are the purr-fect pair and looking for a comfortable, committed, loving home to spoil them for the rest of their lives.

Both cats were spayed as kittens under the TNR program of Volusia County, so their ears are clipped. They are also current on their vaccines.

Home check required. If interested, please call Josie at 386-697-2026

Adopt Marshmallow! He’s an 8-year-old, 6-lb Chihuahua with a big personality packed into a tiny little body.

Favorite Things: Marshmallow loves cozy dog beds and can usually be found curled up snoozing in the softest spot he can find. He enjoys leisurely walks through the neighborhood and absolutely loves snack time. He’ll gently and politely take treats from your hand and is happiest in a calm, relaxing environment.

Training and Manners: Marshmallow walks nicely on a leash and enjoys getting out for short strolls. He requires potty breaks at minimum every 2 hours, and sleeps peacefully in his dog bed at night. He appreciates routines and does best with people who understand and respect his boundaries.

Health and Care: Marshmallow is neutered, up to date on vaccines and recently had a dental cleaning. Like all dogs, he will need monthly heartworm and flea preventative.

Other Animals: Marshmallow does well with calm, laid-back dogs and also doesn’t mind feline friends. He prefers peaceful companions who respect his space and relaxed lifestyle.

Children: This tiny senior is looking for a home without young children. Teenagers who understand how to interact respectfully with small dogs would be just fine.

Ideal Home: Marshmallow would be happy in either an apartment or a single-family home. He’s looking for a Chihuahua-savvy family who understands his personality and can appreciate his adorable little quirks. A calm home with comfy spots to nap and people who respect his boundaries will make him feel safe and loved.

Overall: Marshmallow is a sweet, spunky little companion who knows exactly how to enjoy the simple things in life. If you’re looking for a tiny dog with personality and lot's of charm, Marshmallow may just be your perfect match.

If you think Marshmallow is the one for you, visit www.pprfl.org to submit an adoption application. If it looks like a great match, his foster family will reach out with more information.

Adopt Chuckie! She’s a 4-year-old, 11-pound terrier.

Favorite Things: Chuckie loves an adventure – especially exploring the great outdoors, taking long walks, and playing fetch in the backyard. Playing with her toys is another favorite pastime and the more toys the better! She also enjoys food of any and every kind. This little girl is high-energy and benefits from lots of physical exercise and mental stimulation, so a family with an active lifestyle who is ready to share their adventures with a canine companion would be her dream come true.

Training & Manners: Chuckie is housetrained in her foster home where she is let out on a regular schedule. She walks well on a leash, has good house manners, and loves a car ride. Chuckie will need additional training and patience with her social skills, e.g. learning to be around strangers and meeting new people and dogs. She is working on managing her inclination to guard her resources and protect them from people and pets she doesn’t know. Given the chance to burn off her energy during the day, Chuckie sleeps soundly in the people bed at night.

Health & Care: Chuckie is spayed, up to date on vaccines, heartworm negative, microchipped, and recently had a dental cleaning. She’s a healthy girl who will just need her monthly flea and heartworm preventatives, like any pup. Chuckie’s terrier coat won’t require regular grooming, but regular brushing, baths, and nail trims will keep this girl looking and feeling her best, especially after a roll in the grass.

Other Animals: Chuckie has experience with calm, laid back dogs. She's also had some experience with cats, but a slow introduction to check the match on both dogs and cats will be important. Squirrels? Well, that’s another story but let’s just say she loves a good chase!

Children: Older children (age 8+) would make the best companions for Chuckie given her high energy level and ongoing training needs.

Ideal Home: Chuckie is an active gal who will do best in a single home with a secure, fenced yard to run off some of that energy in a safe space. She can be left alone in the home in a secure space for a few hours without issues.

Overall: If you are looking for an enthusiastic companion on your adventures and willing to teach her how to be her best self in a safe, loving environment, Chuckie might be the one for you. If you think she might be, visit www.pprfl.org to fill out an adoption application. If it seems like it could be a good match, her foster family will reach out with more information.

Little Girl was ADOPTED!! 🏡

Adopt Little Girl! She is a 3-month-old, 2.9 lb Chihuahua/Miniature Pinscher blend.

Little Girl is a tiny, playful puppy who loves toys, cuddles, puppy kisses, and discovering everything this big world has to offer. She does well with small dogs, has not been tested with cats but her foster thinks she would likely do well, and would do best with respectful, supervised children over 8. Little Girl would be happy in an apartment, condo, townhome, or single-family home, ideally with another small, playful pup and people who are home often to help with her puppy needs and training. She is still learning housetraining, basic manners, leash walking, and even how to eat from a bowl, so her forever family will need plenty of patience.

Little Girl may be tiny, but she’s already got a big personality and a whole lot of love to give!
