Good report…thanks for your help Steve!

Voters in Orland, Surry, Blue Hill, and Penobscot approved the creation of Maine's first regional dam district.

We did it! 😊

We did it! 😊

The results are out — and WOW!

All four towns overwhelmingly voted to form the watershed districts. We’re blown away by the turnout and SO GRATEFUL for everyone who showed up, asked questions, and supported the effort to keep our lakes healthy and locally managed.

So what happens next? The new districts will officially form and begin organizing their work. Stay tuned for updates in the new year as planning and budget discussions get underway.
Thank you again for being part of this big step toward protecting our shared waters and community — together! 💧💚

TODAY's the day, get out and vote! And tag a friend or five in Orland, Penobscot, Blue Hill or Surry!!

A YES vote to—form watershed districts—means:

💧 Local control: 2 watershed districts to own, manage and maintain the dams.
💧 Smart savings: Losing the lakes could cost taxpayers 20x more than saving them.
💧 Ongoing choice: Voters will get to decide each year whether their towns contribute to proposed spending.

Keeping the lakes full protects our shared tax base, supports local businesses and preserves the safety and legacy of our community.

Tomorrow's the day, get out and vote!

A YES vote to form watershed districts means:
💧 Local control: The vote simply proposes two watershed districts to own, manage and maintain the dams.
💧 Smart savings: When compared to the projected losses in annual tax revenue, losing the lakes could cost taxpayers 20x more than saving them.
💧 Ongoing choice: Voters will get to decide each year whether their towns contribute to proposed spending.

Keeping the lakes full protects our shared tax base, supports local businesses and preserves the safety and legacy of our community.

"Without local districts, there’s no clear path forward, and doing nothing would be just as damaging as draining the lakes themselves. The watershed districts give us a smart, practical way to keep local control — and to keep our lakes full, our tax base stable, and our community strong...And every step — every dollar — still requires town approval. Nothing happens without a town vote."

-Alvion Kimball, Orland taxpayer and community voice

As a longtime Orland taxpayer and proud Mainer, I’ve seen plenty of local ballot questions over the years — some complicated, some confusing. But this isn’t one of those. The

“I think it would kill the economy here if we didn’t have the lakes,” he said, estimating that 80 percent of sales at his store go to maintaining waterfront homes and gardens.

(Rob Mushrall, owner of Rob’s Hardware on Route 1, was born and raised in Orland and supports the proposal to give towns more control.) 👆

After major employer’s departure, the area’s economy is largely supported by recreation and homeownership on its lakes.
