Greetings, populace of Glyn Dwfn and friends.

As you all know, Tain Bo is approaching soon. In keeping with the tradition of our great Barony, we will be opening our first sergeantry trials at the event!

We will be using the same sergeantry manual from the previous cycle, which you can view here: https://drive.google.com/file/d/1QIG1LcRox5q35dzVmYOR84TBgsUPPjgG/view?usp=sharing

The purpose of the sergeantry trials is two-fold. The first is to give candidates and the population at large a chance to “sample” the different parts of the SCA. Candidates are required during the trials to engage with a wide range of activities from across the SCA spectrum so that they can better understand and appreciate the work that their fellow members of the barony are passionate about. The second is to identify and foster candidates who are ready to take on a more important role in the barony, acting as leaders and mentors for the newer members of our society. This means that we will expect our sergeants to comport themselves as leaders and role models both during and after their trials.

In order to join the trials, you must:
Be an active member of the SCA residing within the Principality of the Summits. An “active member” is someone who attends at least six SCA activities (practices, events, demos, meet and greets, etc.) a year.
Be a paid member of the society during the sergeantry trials.
Submit a Letter of Intent to the Coronets of Glyn Dwfn.
Agree to complete the quest book before Tain Bo 2027.
Be at least 16 years of age at Tain Bo.

Letters of Intent do not have to be fancy or well-made. They may be done as a “scroll-like object” such as a box, knife sheath, or piece of garb. They can be funny or serious, but should fit the general aesthetic of the SCA. We ask that at least one significant portion (coloring, wording, calligraphy, etc) be done by hand.

We would love to see and show off your letters of intent during the Tain Bo court, and we will ask for them. However, since the time between this announcement and Tain Bo is short, we will accept a placeholder letter of intent (such as a traditional typed and printed letter) with the full SCA appropriate one delivered sometime before the end of May. It is our desire that everyone has the full time they need to produce a work that they will be proud of.

One thing that we will be altering slightly for this set of trials is that we are going to encourage our candidates to involve the populace where practical. We will work with each candidate to find places where a class presentation may replace a written document, or an activity done with the baronial coronets may be done as an activity with the populace. This will not be a requirement, but will instead be an exploration of ways we can involve a larger number of people in the process and look at ways to change the process in the future.

In this spirit, we encourage as many people as possible to involve themselves with the trials. There is no penalty for not completing all of the trials within a year (you are allowed to try again next year), and if you are not comfortable trying out for the trials, we want you to be able to engage with the various presentations throughout the year.

Greetings, wonderful populace of our beautiful and talented barony!

My time as Arts & Sciences Minister is coming to an end. To that end, I am looking for a replacement, as well as a deputy or two. I am hoping to do the handoff at Samhain this October 25th when our new barons step up.

The A&S minister's responsibilities are thus:

*Running Arts and Sciences meetings at least one Monday per month. Gwen (Sam Caradig) has been scheduling them for the Central Point Library for the last few months, to great success. This has been a very good arrangement, as it means no one has to have their home ready for a ton of visitors, which can be hard when people have loved ones and roommates who live with them.

*Advertising the A&S nights on both the official barony page, the discussion page, and other social media (Discord, etc.) at least one week before they happen. This will include making an event page here on Facebook. If this is unfamiliar territory, one of us can walk you through it until you are comfortable! This is also something a deputy can help with, if we find one who is willing to do it.

*Attending Moot. Moot is on the second Tuesday of the month at around 7:15 PM. You can attend in person or via Zoom. During moot, you will be asked to give an officer report. This can be as simple as letting people know how many members of the populous were at the latest A&S night. If there is a Moot you cannot make it too, you can ask a deputy to attend in your stead, or send your officer report to the seneschal beforehand.

*Writing Officer Reports. As stated in the point above, this can be as simple as attendance records. If they are spoken aloud during Moot, there isn't as much need to have a physical copy. However, once a quarter, you will be required to send a report in via email to the kingdom arts and sciences minister. This can, again, include attendance records. It can also include the sort of activities people have been participating in, classes the populace are requesting, and anything else to let them know how we are doing down here for A&S.

* Scheduling occasional A&S classes. This does not need to happen for every single meeting, but occasionally there is enough call from the populous to warrant hosting a class on a specific subject. For instance, this last A&S meeting taught both the populace of our barony and other members of our Rogue Valley community basic beginner sewing, as well as passing out free fabric that had been rescued from people looking to get rid of it in our area. If you receive requests for specific classes, but you do not feel qualified to lead a night focused on that activity, you can reach out to other members of the populace, as well as the officers chat, to see if there is somebody willing to teach on that topic.

*Running(or finding a deputy to run, which we are working on) Bardic Night two Wednesdays a month— one bardic circle-type night on the first Wednesday of the month and one more focused on people working together on specific songs/stories/etc. on the third Wednesday. Our soon-to-be Baronin Robbin Bowrain (Devin Van Hine) has been running these faithfully for at least a decade, but it will be very difficult for them to continue after stepping up. They have recently started holding these at the CP library, as well. This is a role that could be handed to a deputy, just as Robbin has acted as a bardic deputy to the A&S minister for years. *I highly recommend having a deputy to fill this role, so as not to burn yourself out with too much responsibility/too full a social calendar.* Said deputy would be in charge of basically all of the responsibilities of the A&S nights, save for sending in an officer report quarterly. Instead, they would report directly to the A&S minister.

****YOU DO NOT NEED TO BE SPECIALIZED IN A PARTICULAR ART FORM IN ORDER TO FILL THIS ROLE! 🩵**** Your only qualifications are up-to-date paid membership in the SCA and a willingness to foster and support all of the artists and would-be artists of our barony!

And remember, YOU DO NOT HAVE TO DO THIS ALL ALONE! There will be a team of other officers to lean on and learn from, and hopefully a deputy or two as well!

If you are interested in stepping into or learning more about this role, please email me at [email protected], PM me here, or respond to this post.

Thank you, and I look forward to hearing from anyone interested!

YIS,
Colette la trouvere
Glyn Dwfn A&S Minister
