Greetings, populace of Glyn Dwfn and friends.
As you all know, Tain Bo is approaching soon. In keeping with the tradition of our great Barony, we will be opening our first sergeantry trials at the event!
We will be using the same sergeantry manual from the previous cycle, which you can view here: https://drive.google.com/file/d/1QIG1LcRox5q35dzVmYOR84TBgsUPPjgG/view?usp=sharing
The purpose of the sergeantry trials is two-fold. The first is to give candidates and the population at large a chance to “sample” the different parts of the SCA. Candidates are required during the trials to engage with a wide range of activities from across the SCA spectrum so that they can better understand and appreciate the work that their fellow members of the barony are passionate about. The second is to identify and foster candidates who are ready to take on a more important role in the barony, acting as leaders and mentors for the newer members of our society. This means that we will expect our sergeants to comport themselves as leaders and role models both during and after their trials.
In order to join the trials, you must:
Be an active member of the SCA residing within the Principality of the Summits. An “active member” is someone who attends at least six SCA activities (practices, events, demos, meet and greets, etc.) a year.
Be a paid member of the society during the sergeantry trials.
Submit a Letter of Intent to the Coronets of Glyn Dwfn.
Agree to complete the quest book before Tain Bo 2027.
Be at least 16 years of age at Tain Bo.
Letters of Intent do not have to be fancy or well-made. They may be done as a “scroll-like object” such as a box, knife sheath, or piece of garb. They can be funny or serious, but should fit the general aesthetic of the SCA. We ask that at least one significant portion (coloring, wording, calligraphy, etc) be done by hand.
We would love to see and show off your letters of intent during the Tain Bo court, and we will ask for them. However, since the time between this announcement and Tain Bo is short, we will accept a placeholder letter of intent (such as a traditional typed and printed letter) with the full SCA appropriate one delivered sometime before the end of May. It is our desire that everyone has the full time they need to produce a work that they will be proud of.
One thing that we will be altering slightly for this set of trials is that we are going to encourage our candidates to involve the populace where practical. We will work with each candidate to find places where a class presentation may replace a written document, or an activity done with the baronial coronets may be done as an activity with the populace. This will not be a requirement, but will instead be an exploration of ways we can involve a larger number of people in the process and look at ways to change the process in the future.
In this spirit, we encourage as many people as possible to involve themselves with the trials. There is no penalty for not completing all of the trials within a year (you are allowed to try again next year), and if you are not comfortable trying out for the trials, we want you to be able to engage with the various presentations throughout the year.
