Ukrainians have long been known for the intricate, elaborate, beautiful embroidery of their shirts, which form the foundation of the folk outfit, both for daily wear, and even more beautiful examples for festive wear, for both men and women. Every region of Ukraine has a traditional form of shirt and style of embroidery.
The embroidered shirt, known in Ukraine as a "Vyshyvanka", has come to be a hallmark of Ukrainian pride and identity - so much so, that at certain points in history, the wearing of it has been banned by authorities who wanted to destroy Ukrainian identity.
In modern times, a holiday for the expression of Ukrainian pride and support for Ukrainian cultural liberty, known as Vyshyvanka Day, has come to be celebrated world wide. That day is today.
We encourage all who have them, to show your support by wearing Ukrainian embroidered shirts today as you go about your normal business.
We congratulate Ukraine on maintaining it's unique identity and culture, in the face of 400 years of suppression by imperial occupiers!
