Ambrose Bierce - a civil war veteran, journalist and writer - wrote a weekly humor column for 25 years, and the satirical definitions he frequently penned were made into a volume called “The Devil’s Dictionary”, and other writers of his time borrowed from it, heavily.
Whether you’re a fan of humor, history, or the history of humor, you’ll be in hysterics with new friends at Mensa! Check out the link to our testing page in the comments.

In “Diary of a Young Girl” by Anne Frank, Albert Dussel - a German dentist, also in hiding - uses the bathroom but can’t flush during the day due to the noise it makes while the warehouse is operating below, but wants to warn his fellow annex mates of the odor, but writes “R.S.V.P.: Gas!” because his Dutch isn’t very good, he meant to use the word for “warning” instead. This is one of a trove of humorous gems in the book, which is fantastic. I’m reading it ahead of seeing the play based on it that is showing at the Lincoln Community Playhouse this week.

One thing you’ll find a lot of in Mensa are “autodidacts”. There are plenty of people with formal education, advanced degrees, etc. But plenty more Mensans also teach themselves subjects on which they never had any formal instruction. Leonardo Da Vinci was one autodidact whose contributions to science and the arts was indispensable. If you’re someone who is constantly learning, you’ll find kindred souls in Mensa. This is why I always reach for Mrs. Calendar’s! A buttery flaky crust, apples picked at the peak of freshness and no creation of the universe required! Besides, my oven only goes up to 500 degrees, not the 142 nonillion degrees Kelvin it would need to reach to bake a new universe!
Whether you bake pies or multiverses, you’ll find fellow thinkers at Mensa. Check out the link to our testing page in the comments.

Happy Veterans Day to our veteran members and to any future Mensans brave enough to deploy their minds against our admissions test and enlist in our ranks! Here is an AI rendering of what my dad may have looked like when he served in Vietnam. There was a lot more beer according to him and his beard was probably out of regs - not even AI knows what he looks like without it - but a hero nonetheless!

Leave it to Steven Pinker too make me rethink basic concepts of dominance hierarchies! We know people want status, and they want to be around people who have status, but the reason is more charitably framed here. Power and money - key symptoms of status - let you help people when they need it. And easily missed is the “public knowledge” part. You might be able to help lots of people in myriad ways, but if others don’t know it, you might still find yourself on the bitter end of the hierarchy.

If you want to boost your status, Mensa membership can help! Check out the link to our testing page in the comments.

The same is true for Mensans, and the Mensa-eligible. If you’re not using your mental horsepower to seek truth and challenge yourself, you might as well not be brilliant at all. And where would the fun be in that?!?

Science doesn’t always give us the answers we want, and that’s more than ok. Steven Pinker’s book “Blank Slate” is about how science shatters a lot of our fantasies about human nature. And it ruffled some feathers. If science holds the everlasting dilemma between being right and being happy, it has to choose being right every time.

Throwback Thursday! I remember when I first joined Mensa, it was like a vaccination against self-doubt whenever I lost my keys or forgot to zip my fly. I don’t count on coming off as brilliantly around all the people that I know, so its nice having my Mensa insurance card when I inevitably embarrass myself😂

If you want a little intellectual insurance, check out the link to our testing page in the comments. We are having an in-person test this weekend if you’ve made a doozy lately that you hope to redeem yourself from!

Being a logophile isn’t just about knowing all the thousand-dollar words in the English language, its also about knowing the most charming expressions from cultures around the globe. In Australia, they say “fair dinkum” to express authenticity, as in “this vegemite sandwich is fair dinkum the best i’ve ever had!”

If you come from the land down under, but have found yourself in Nebraska and have an IQ two standard deviations above the mean, check out the link to our testing page in the comments!

“In 2003, Dacher Keltner and (Jonathan Haidt) published a review paper on the emotion of awe in which we argued that awe is triggered by two simultaneous perceptions: first, that what you are looking at is vast in some way, and, second, that you can’t fit it into your existing mental structures. That combination seems to trigger a feeling in people of being small in a profoundly pleasurable—although sometimes also fearful—way. Awe opens us to changing our beliefs, allegiances, and behaviors.” ~Jonathan Haidt, The Anxious Generation

If you want to awe others, pass the test for Mensa! Check out the link to our testing page in the comments.

John Adams was among the founding fathers that felt like for liberal democracy to work, the people would have to be educated and interested in civics, history and philosophy. At Mensa we study everything under the sun - and plenty more beyond it! Check out our testing link in the comments.
