A free summer literacy program created specifically for Black children ages 5–8.
Through reading, discussion, movement, and community-building, children will explore literacy while developing confidence, cultural awareness, and pride in who they are.

* Black children ages 5–8
* Boys and girls welcome
* Registration required
* Space is limited due to personal funding

A parent or guardian must attend each session. This is not a drop-off program.

❓ FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
Why is the program specifically for Black children?
Because Black children deserve spaces where they are centered, affirmed, and celebrated.
Being Black is a category of its own. Within that category are many experiences and identities—young children, teenagers, adults, men, women, and families. I am a Black woman who was once a young Black girl, then a Black teenager, and now a mother raising Black boys.
As an Omaha native, I have experienced the prejudice, racism, colorism, and biases that can come with being Black in our society. Those experiences taught me how important it is for Black children to develop confidence, self-worth, and a strong sense of identity at an early age.
I want my children, and other Black children, to know that their skin, features, hair, culture, history, and voices are valuable. I want them to be proud of who they are before the world has a chance to tell them otherwise.
This program is about more than reading. It is about helping young Black children build confidence, literacy skills, and a love of learning while seeing themselves reflected in the stories they read and the conversations they have.
The world may try to categorize, overlook, underestimate, or even harm Black children simply because they are Black. My goal is to help them understand their worth, recognize their potential, and develop the skills to succeed. Literacy is one of those skills. There is power in being knowledgeable, and reading is one of the strongest foundations for that knowledge.
This program exists because Black children matter, and they deserve opportunities intentionally created with them in mind.
Is there a cost?
No. The program is free, but space is limited because it is personally funded.
Can I drop my child off?
No. A parent or guardian must remain present during each session.
Does my child need to be an advanced reader?
No. Children of all reading levels are welcome.
