📣 PNWFC Member Programming 📣
It Costs How Much?!

This month is part seminar and part book club! We'll discuss some elements of how local yarn gets to you and why it feels “expensive.”

In this extra EXTRA special event, we'll be joined by PNW-based historian Monica J. Stenzel who will set the scene for how the U.S. natural fiber & textile industry got to where it is today, why the things we love cost what they do, and choices we can make as consumers that can directly impact our regional fiber farmers, mills, artisans, and yarn shops.
stenzel is currently completing her PhD on wool science at the University of Leeds in the UK. She also teaches history for Highline College in King County, is a Royal Institution Freer Fellow, and an avid knitter & natural fibers enthusiast!

PNWFC is honored to have Monica co-host and lead the discussion for both sessions of our book club!

📣 Attention PNWFC Membership 📣

Our August seminar is coming up next week - this month's subject:
It Costs How Much?! 💸😲💸

We will be joined by PNW historian Monica J. Stenzel who will set the scene for how the U.S. natural fiber & textile industry got to where it is today, why the things we love cost what they do, and choices we can make as consumers that can directly impact our regional fiber farmers, mills, artisans, and yarn shops.

But wait, there's more! 📚📖📚

We will end the session introducing Vanishing Fleece by Clara Parkes. This is the first book in our pilot book club series and we chose it because it paints a picture of a crumbling supply chain that (probably) effects everyone reading this post.

Here are some great options to help communities affected by the Spokane fires. Thank you Washington State Department of Commerce for sharing these support resources.

At Commerce, we live in the communities we serve. For many of us, Spokane is home. 💜

Our hearts are with everyone affected by the Spokane Complex Fire. It has been a heartbreaking few days as we all know someone who is evacuated or lost everything.

We’re grateful for the first responders working tirelessly to protect us and the helpers supporting neighbors.

The City of Spokane has a wildfire webpage with resources and information for community members. If you’re looking for ways to help, the webpage lists community organizations accepting donations to support displaced families: https://my.spokanecity.org/wildfireinfo/

Here are some ways to help:
• H.O.M.E. Starts Here Fund: The City of Spokane - Municipal Government is accepting donations to support individuals and families affected by the ongoing wildfires.
• Innovia Foundation: Accepting donations to support nonprofits, businesses, and community organizations working to meet the needs of those impacted by wildfires.
• American Red Cross Northwest Region: Providing emergency relief and shelter, and looking for volunteers.
• Catholic Charities Eastern Washington: An emergency fund is helping support individuals and families.
• Second Harvest Inland Northwest: Accepting non-perishable food items.
• Partners INW: Collecting donations of clothing, diapers, and hygiene items.
• SpokAnimal C.A.R.E.: Collecting pet supplies and looking for volunteers to foster displaced animals.
• Project Beauty Share: Collecting hygiene products, such as toothbrushes, toothpaste, soap, deodorant, hairbrushes, etc.
• Global Neighborhood Thrift & Vintage: Accepting donations in their Fire Emergency Donation Bins.
