We went rowing, we climbed aloft, WE SAW WHALES!! A small group of Orca were heading north out of Hood Canal and as they went by we deployed our hydrophone and listened to their lovely calls. Never has a 20+ foot long apex predator sounded so cute! Check out the later photos for an Oklahoman’s reaction to hearing whales for the first time.

Had a wonderful first day out with the middle school students from the Seattle Academy of Arts and Sciences. A -4.3 low tide kept us trapped in Shilshole until the early afternoon but beautiful afternoon breezes made it worth the wait! Tomorrow we go north.

Friday Harbor to Watmough Bay with a glorious sunset over Chadwick Hill. Our first day out with Portland Waldorf was a joy! We had some lovely sailing outside of Cattle Pass complete with an Orca sighting before letting the current carry us around the south end of Lopez Island to our peaceful anchorage for the night before we cross the straits in the morning.
