💫 Every young person deserves a safe place to land and the support they need to thrive. That's the mission behind Community Youth Services and with your help, we can make an even bigger difference. Stop by any Haggen store through June 2 to make a donation to our Building Brighter Futures Together campaign and show your support.

Community Youth Services empowers youth and their families across our community to meet their goals for safety, stability, belonging, and success through individualized services and advocacy. Funds raised will go toward providing food for youth and young adults at Rosie's Place Young Adult Shelter and Outreach Center—a vital resource offering overnight shelter, day-time case management, mental health support, and street outreach for those without safe and stable housing.

"Haggen's partnership helps us address basic needs for youth without safe and stable housing. When young people have access to food they gain the stability needed to focus on their health, education, and future goals." — Victoria Wortberg, Community Engagement Director, Community Youth Services

Olympia Mayor Dontae Payne first announced the city’s intent to eventually close The Jungle during a Thurston County Chamber State of the Community address on Jan. 14.

City staff later clarified that they don’t anticipate closing the encampment this year, and would soon begin collaborating with local partners on a phased, regional plan to address The Jungle.

“The shared goal is to close the site safely and compassionately, in a way that supports both encampment residents and the broader community,” the City of Olympia states of the transition plan on its website.

The City of Olympia confirmed Friday that it has started working with the City of Lacey and Thurston County, as well as stakeholders representing Olympia, Lacey, Thurston County, Intercity Transit, local homeless response and behavioral health systems.

“The group is meeting regularly to coordinate next steps, including near-term mitigation and longer-term transition planning,” the City of Olympia said in a news release.

We are saddened to report that our good friend, long time SAN member, and former editor of the Senior News, Rick Crawford, has died. Rick's nephew and caregiver, Patrick, reported to us that "Rick took his final breath at 12:25 pm on Tuesday, May 5th. It was very peaceful." Patrick wanted to thank everyone for providing so much love and support to not only Rick, but to the family as well. A Celebration of Life is tentatively scheduled for Saturday, July 11th. More details will be shared at a later time.
