To finish our block on the Underground Railroad, our older class read the poem “I Dream a World” by Langston Hughes. The students were then challenged to each write their own stanza about the world they would dream up… here’s our completed poem, by our 10-13 year old students.

🐿️During this block, our preschool and kindergarden kids learned about their place in the world! We started with Earth and then narrowed our lens from planet to country to state to town and street, and finally their own homes. The spring season also brought us stories of windy days and silly squirrels. After reading “Squirrel Nutkin” by Beatrix Potter several times and learning some fun finger rhymes, we honed our fine motor skills by peeling hardboiled eggs, cracking nuts, and making homemade peanut butter for snack time. We ended our block by bringing everything full circle with a walk around uptown Olean, following our map of North
Union Street to visit some friendly squirrel sculptures nearby!

📚In Waldorf-inspired spaces, we believe in and celebrate the power of story.

☘️During our last block, our PreK/Kinder kids got to lean into St. Patrick’s Day by way of Brigid of Kildare. Brigid is known for her story of miraculously being able to feed and warm the needy - particularly from her tender and patient ways with the cows in her care. She churned butter and shared it for all, just as our youngest students were able to experience in class but with cream, a jar, and a marble. They enjoyed their bread and butter and also shared with the older kids.

✨Their second story of the block was Eric Carle’s “Draw Me a Star”. The students discovered stars occurring in nature all around them and practiced their fine motor skills with drawing, cutting, folding, and painting different star forms. Here at EMW we are committed to highlighting the human and soul experiences in our lessons.

“The question is not “how much does the youth know?” when he has finished his education — but how much does he care? And about how many orders of things does he care? In fact, how large is the room in which he finds his feet set? And, therefore, how full is the life he has before him?” (Charlotte Mason)

🪐Not only did one student say “that experiment blew my mind”, but the class already has plans to create a video where the villain figures out how to harness the force of gravity.

✨In each block, we aim to truly “live” in that topic for five weeks. Yes, we learned facts and figures about the planets and the formula for force, but we also created the constellations and read the stories of the Greek gods and heroes. The children understand why the planets were named what they are and also have remembered facts because of the beautiful stories.

🎨 At Enchanted Mountain Waldorf, we incorporate both phenomenon-based and art-based learning into our weekly routine. Not as an add-on, not “if we have time”, but scheduled into our weekly rhythm.

🌎 During our current block on astronomy, our older students are learning about Newton’s Three Laws of Motion… but before we teach the why this matters in our study of space, the students are experimenting with each of the laws and drawing their own conclusions. They are watching these principles play out in real time on a small scale and then wondering how the same principles affect the motion of the planets. We are intentionally giving them time and space to think deeply before we discuss the applications.

✨We have studied the life cycle of stars and graphed their luminosity and magnitude, and also intentionally scheduled time in for our younger class to create their own watercolor constellation books and our older class to hone their sewing skills by creating stuffed constellation animals. The wonder- and beauty-based approach to learning should not be an add on or the first thing cut, instead it ought to receive the same weight and importance of “rigor” in our homeschools. Our children deserve it, their curiosity demands, and their hearts require it.

👁️ Last week, we wrapped our Human Body study and our students had a museum showcase (which we lovingly call Night at the Museum) to share what they learned and built with their families and friends. It’s so incredible to watch them make connections across our studies: we recalled things we had learned earlier this year from both our Ancient Egypt and Chemistry units! I love getting to see them each take so much pride in their work.

“The gardener does not make a plant grow. The job of a gardener is to create optimal conditions for growth.” (Sir Ken Robinson)

🎨 Before handwriting comes fine motor control practice, before math comes pattern and color recognition, before science comes respect and honor for the planet and seasons, before reading comes listening and internalizing beautiful stories and poetry. All of these are developmentally appropriate for children up through age seven, and yet traditional schooling continues to lower the age that reading, writing, and mathematics are expected and even tested.

If you’re looking for a more gentle and holistic approach to education, an approach that honors each child and in turn teaches them to honor humanity and the world around them, join us at Enchanted Mountain Waldorf!
