The Oklahoma Chamber Symphony (OCS) is pleased to announce auditions for Horn 3/Assistant Principal Horn. OCS is a civic orchestra based in Oklahoma City. OCS performs at least seven (7) free concerts per season. Most concerts are performed free of charge so that classical music can be shared with the largest audience possible in our community, regardless of financial contribution. The Orchestra’s season runs from August-May of each year. Rehearsals are held on Tuesday evenings from 7:00pm-9:30pm; Dress rehearsals are typically held on Saturdays of concerts from 10:00am-12:30pm; Concerts are typically held on Saturday evenings at 7:30pm. Services are held at First Church OKC (131 NW 4th St, OKC 73102).

Thank you to those who came to our Horns, Hops, and Harmony concert provided by the Oklahoma Chamber Symphony at the Big Friendly tonight!

It was great to perform for everyone and great to have a few members of the UCO School of Music horn studio in attendance!

Can you believe we did that performance on just ONE rehearsal?!?

We look forward to doing more performances like this in the future! (though, if it's this hot, we will aim to be inside. Ha!)

How to know when it's time to stop practicing.
(in 6 easy steps)

Step 1) Warm-up

Step 2) Start working on music for the upcoming Horns of the Oklahoma Chamber Symphony quartet performance.

Step 3) Your toddler comes in and points at your case saying “Put it up daddy. Put it up!” and starts bringing your case to you.

Step 4) continue practicing the run your on.

Step 5) your toddler comes and takes slides off your horn to get you to stop practicing.

Step 6) listen to your toddler and put the horn up. You can practice during his nap when he can't take slides off your horn. 🤣

PS: This Laskey protegé mouthpiece is great for hitting those high D’s! If you want to hear it for yourself, you should totally come to hear the OCS Horns @ The Big Friendly this Saturday at 7:00pm!

Here is the answer to last week's Trivia Thursday!
(I know, I know… I said to check back on Tuesday... It's Wednesday… I was sidetracked finding music for this Saturday's performance at The Big Friendly, which you should totally go to!)

So, here is the answer:

From role please!

The evolutionary line is roughly:

1. Animal horns and simple signaling horns (ancient origins)
2. Hunting horns (used for communication during hunts)
* The Trompe de Chasse (French hunting horn)
* Various German hunting horns
3. Natural Horn (adapted for musical use in orchestras)
4. Valved French Horn (19th century)
5. Modern double horn and contemporary French horn designs

So looking at that info, the trompe De chasse and the natural horn are both predecessors of the modern-day double French horn!

The Alphorn is from a completely different part of the horn family, and did NOT evolve into the natural horn or any of the other types of horns!

We just absolutely love this horn quartet at the beginning of the second movement of Rimsky-Korsakov’s Capriccio Espagnole.
This is from our performance during the second half of this previous season. We look forward to more moments like this in the upcoming 2026-2027 season!
