🚨 What happens to infant feeding when disaster strikes?

Infants and young children are particularly vulnerable during disasters and emergencies, yet preparedness for Infant and Young Child Feeding in Emergencies (IYCF-E) remains limited.

That's why COBA is offering Emergency Infant Feeding Support Training as part of our Fall Education & Training event.

This half-day training will focus on:

• Supporting breastfeeding during emergencies
• Safe feeding for all infants and young children
• Supporting families experiencing stress and disruption
• Responding to infant feeding needs in emergency settings

Participants who complete the training will be recognized as an Emergency Infant Feeding Specialist and be equipped to volunteer and work in a variety of spaces following an emergency.

What happens when families experience crisis or trauma?

For parents and babies, stressful or traumatic experiences can affect much more than the immediate situation.

One of our morning sessions at COBA's Fall Education & Training event will explore Supporting the Mother-Baby Dyad Through Crisis & Trauma, led by Dr. Joyce Tow.

This session will look at the mother and baby as a connected unit and consider how we can better support families when they are navigating difficult or unexpected circumstances.

Because supporting infant feeding also means understanding the circumstances surrounding the family.

Maternal mental health can have a significant impact on the mother, baby, and the people supporting them.

At COBA's Fall Education & Training event, Dr. Joyce Tow will lead a session on Screening for Maternal Mental Health Disorders, giving attendees an opportunity to learn more about recognizing and responding to mental health concerns in the perinatal period.

Whether you work directly with families or support them in another capacity, this is an important part of providing informed, compassionate care.

Meet one of our Fall Education & Training speakers: Dr. Joyce Tow! 👋

Dr. Joyce Tow brings decades of experience in nursing, women's health, mental health, disaster and trauma response, military nursing, and education to this year's event.

Her morning sessions will focus on Supporting the Mother-Baby Dyad Through Crisis & Trauma and Screening for Maternal Mental Health Disorders.

With experience spanning obstetric care, postpartum and nursery care, disaster response, mental health, military deployments, and academic teaching, Dr. Tow brings a unique perspective to the intersection of maternal health, trauma, and infant feeding.

It's Deaf & Hard of Hearing Breastfeeding Week! The 2026 Deaf & Hard of Hearing Breastfeeding Week theme is "Close the Gap, Strengthen the Bridge: Community, Care & Connection."

The observance was created by the DC Breastfeeding Coalition last year and is celebrated from September 16-22. This observance aims to highlight the unique needs of the nation's marginalized and underrepresented Deaf community and ensure accessible breastfeeding education, support, and community, because language and breastfeeding access matter from birth!
