Spritz | Week 2 Update

This week we continued Spritz’s basic obedience training with a heavier focus on dog neutrality and impulse control.

Spritz has a lot of daily structure and clear boundaries, which help him learn how to make better decisions. We’ve been working on waiting at every threshold and building impulse control around things he really wants, including his favorite tug toy.

We also worked heavily on place, teaching Spritz how to regulate himself and remain calm in the presence of another dog. This is especially important for him as we focus on changing his initial reaction toward other dogs.

When Spritz makes a good decision on his own without guidance, we reinforce it. That independence is a huge part of building true neutrality. Before we can expect appropriate social cues, Spritz first needs to learn that another dog doesn’t always mean he needs to react.

We made a LOT of progress this week, and we’re excited to keep building on it!

Our number one reason for denying an application is the failure to provide proof of heartworm prevention. We consider this essential for ensuring the health and safety of the animals and believe it demonstrates responsible pet ownership.

In 2026, we have recorded the highest number of cases, with eight dogs requiring treatment for heartworm disease. This represents the highest number of positive cases we have encountered to date.

Heartworm disease adversely affects a dog’s health by causing severe lung damage, heart failure, and death. Treatment is costly and distressing for the animal.

We strongly recommend that all pet owners schedule annual heartworm testing and maintain year-round prevention. Symptoms of heartworm disease may include a persistent cough, fatigue, difficulty breathing, and weight loss.

If left untreated, heartworm disease will progressively lead to cardiac failure and ultimately result in the death of the animal.

Prevention is straightforward, administering one chewable tablet monthly can save a dog’s life.

Loki is graduating from a 6-week board and train tomorrow! We’re hopeful he’ll find a loving forever family to come home to!

Loki, a 2 year old neutered male Australian Cattle Dog (Blue Heeler) weighing about 38 pounds, is full of personality and love🐶💙!

He thrives on human interaction and is a joy to have around. Loki makes a wonderful travel buddy, enjoying rides between the seats and keeping an eye out👀!

While good with other dogs, Loki tends to do best with those who understand and tolerate his lively spirit. He needs a playmate of similar size and age, who has a gentle, tolerant nature. True to his breed, Loki can be independent and focused at times.

He’s crate and house trained, and his favorite activities include watching squirrels and splashing in water💦. Loki would blossom in a home that can provide him with mental stimulation and a sense of purpose. He’s eager to please and enjoys training!

Loki could excel in dog sports or be a wonderful hiking companion. A home with a tall wooden fence. Loki’s looking for a family who can give him love, patience, and the active life he craves🥰!

Loki is neutered, microchipped, dewormed, heartworm and tick disease tested and on preventatives!

Paul’s Valley Animal Shelter is in urgent need of our support. Recently, they were without water (which thankfully has been restored) and they are desperately seeking fosters and adopters to give these wonderful animals a loving home.

There are many dogs and cats patiently waiting for the warmth and comfort of a forever family. Even if you cannot adopt, short-term fostering can make a tremendous difference in their lives.

I'm Cricket, no I'm not a bug. Crickets in many cultures symbolize good luck, wisdom, creativity, and protection! I’m a 4 year old Mini Australian Shepherd💚!

I truly am the epitome of a velcro dog but I don't get underfoot. I'm usually a step behind or by your side! I've gotten pretty good on the leash. I still like to cross over on occasion or pull, but I'm really in a hurry to see what's ahead. We do about 2.5 to 3 miles each morning and I'm always exposed to something new.

I'm not a big fan of car rides but I'm working on it. I'm not a big fan of crates either. My foster learned pretty quickly he could trust me. I didn't destroy anything or disturb them while sleeping. But I do get excited to see them each morning!

I've been told I'm pretty awesome since I've never had an accident in the house and I'm pretty good at recall!

I will say I was slow to adapt to my new surroundings so I didn't eat well for a few weeks but now I gladly eat whatever is put in front of me. I wasn't food-motivated and wasn’t sure about those things they called treats, but now I know better and see them as special. I've found I can trust my people. And when foster dad says he'll be back...he does.

I would love nothing more than to lie on the couch being petted all day. The meowing animals (kitties) seem to control the bedroom end of the house. I'm curious about them and their behavior but really don't give them much attention.

There’s a big old lady dog at my end of the house that really doesn't get around well that seems to be the boss, I get along with her well.

I'm starting to enjoy this new activity referred to as play. I'm not good at it, but I'll come around. I can't wait to meet someone who needs nothing more than a lot of love and companionship. If that's you, I'm your girl!

Spritz: Week 1 Training Update!

Our primary focus during Spritz’s first week was engagement with his handler, building toy and food drive, basic obedience, and dog neutrality at a distance.

Engagement & Drive

Building engagement with the handler is extremely important. We want Spritz to learn that his handler is more exciting and valuable than everything happening around him. When a dog is highly engaged with their handler, they are more likely to look to that person for guidance and direction.

Because of this, we incorporate tug play into every training session. Playing with your dog is a great way to build engagement and strengthen your relationship. Spritz wins each game because we are using that success to build his confidence and increase his drive to engage with his handler. Timing the reward is extremely important, and how you play tug matters as well.

We are also hand feeding Spritz one meal each day to help build his food drive and reinforce the idea that good things come through his handler.

Basic Obedience

This week we introduced:

• Heel
• Sit
• Down
• Stay
• Place

Place and stay are especially important for Spritz because they help teach impulse control, emotional regulation, and the ability to remain calm instead of immediately reacting to something around him.

Dog Neutrality

We also began working on dog neutrality. We tested Spritz’s boundaries and pushed him outside of his comfort zone, but never more than we felt he could successfully handle with proper guidance.

We started working around dogs at a distance so that Spritz could remain under threshold. The goal right now is not to force an interaction, but to teach him that he can see a trigger, experience those big feelings, and still make a good decision with the guidance of his handler.

We utilized a lot of outside turns during these sessions. An outside turn acts almost like a reset button, giving Spritz the opportunity to redirect his attention back to his handler. He is allowed to look at the trigger, but we then bring his attention back to us.

Spritz has already had opportunities to make some of his own good decisions this week, and he has done very well with them.

We will continue working on his dog neutrality before moving into working on more appropriate social cues and interactions. It is important to properly address the behavior rather than simply avoiding the trigger or throwing him into situations before he is ready. Understanding the why behind the reaction allows us to better guide him through those big feelings and teach him how to handle them appropriately.

We are extremely proud of Spritz and the progress he has made during his first week. He has a long way to go, but he has given us a great foundation to build on, and we’re excited to see what next week brings! 🩵

Loki is graduating from a 6-week board and train program on the 20 th. 🥳! We would love to find his forever family before he graduates.

Loki is a 2 year old Australian Cattle Dog (Blue Heeler)! Loki adores people and wants all your attention. He is a great travel companion and likes to keep a lookout by riding between the seats.

Loki does well with other dogs but seems to do best with those more tolerant of his busy heeler energy! Loki would love a playmate of similar size and age.

Loki is your typical true heeler, he loves being independent and focused at times. His favorite activities are squirrel watching and anything with water! He is house and crate trained.

Loki would excel in a home where he can have a job that keeps him occupied. He wants to please and loves to train. He would make a great dog-sport or hiking buddy!

Loki must have a taller wooden fence in his forever home. He is neutered, vaccinated, microchipped, dewormed, heartworm and tick disease negative, and on preventatives.
