Miss Betty heard we were trying to pay off our vet bill and laughed directly in our faces.

Actually, she cackled. 🫠

Because apparently our little old lady decided NOW would be a great time to develop a hernia.

Her bladder said, “I’M TIRED OF THIS, GRANDPA!” and tried to peace out of her abdomen entirely.

Unfortunately, we’re not exaggerating much. Her bladder is basically bulging out into her belly through the hernia, and our poor girl is in a LOT of pain.

For those who don’t know Betty, she’s a paralyzed senior who needs her bladder manually expressed. Which is already complicated enough without adding an extremely painful hernia to the mix. She’s understandably not too interested in anyone touching her belly right now.

The good news? Betty has absolutely BLOSSOMED with Haley. She’s gained weight, she’s happy, and she’s got so much life in her now. We’re not about to let a stupid hernia ruin that.

So, surgery it is!

Unfortunately, it’s bad enough that Betty will be staying at the vet hospital until they can get her into surgery.

We weren’t even planning to do a $5 Friday post this week.

But Betty apparently couldn’t wait until Friday.

So here we are. On a THURSDAY. Asking for money. Again. 😭

And we’re sorry. Really. We know we’ve been asking a LOT lately. We’re sick of asking, and we’re sure some of you are sick of seeing us ask.

But this is what happens when you choose to rescue seniors and special needs animals. And Betty, being both, has apparently decided to give us the full experience.

So, happy $5 Thursday, everybody! 🙃

If you can spare $5 toward Betty’s surgery and hospital stay, we would be so, so grateful. If you can’t donate, sharing her story helps us too.

We’re trying SO hard to get our existing vet bill paid down, and unfortunately the oldies don’t seem particularly interested in cooperating with that plan.

🔥 RESCUE HOT TAKES #2

Your pets don’t all have to like each other.

We have a whole lot of animals in our care, and we can promise you they’re not all sitting around holding paws and singing Kumbaya. 😂

And we practice what we preach!

In my own home, (Kathryn), I have a dog who has her own room because she isn’t safe around our senior dogs.

Clarence, one of our senior cats, has her own space in my son’s room because she needs her peace and quiet to feel safe.

Our Halloween Trio have their own space because the other cats in their house aren’t exactly rolling out the welcome mat for them.

Would it be easier if everyone got along? ABSOLUTELY.

But they don’t. So we make it work.

They all still get love, attention, and time with their people. It just takes a little more planning, a few more doors, and a whole lot of patience.

We’ve seen animals lose their homes because they didn’t get along with another pet. Sometimes rehoming really is necessary, but sometimes people just don’t realize there are other options.

Your pets don’t have to be best friends to have good lives.

Now tell us, are your pets actually friends, or are they just tolerating their living arrangements? 😂

Hello, new friends!!

We’ve had a whole bunch of new people join us lately, so we wanted to take a minute to introduce ourselves!

We’re Silver Paws Golden Days Co., a small, completely volunteer-run 501(c)(3) rescue based in Norman, Oklahoma!

Our focus is senior and special needs animals. Most of our animals come from euthanasia lists at open-intake municipal shelters, but we also take in animals from the community. Sometimes their owners have passed away or gone into care themselves. Sometimes an animal has become disabled or developed medical needs their family can’t or won’t manage.

We’ve pulled animals from across the Midwest, including Kansas and Nebraska, and have foster families throughout the OKC metro.

We usually have around 50 animals in our care at any given time. Senior cats, paralyzed dogs, blind ones, lots of oldies, and a handful of younger animals who apparently lied about their ages to get into the senior citizen club. 😂

We also have a really hard time leaving family members behind. If four old dogs end up at the shelter together, we’re going to try our hardest to get all four out. If an old dog has spent its entire life with a younger dog, we’re not going to separate them just because one doesn’t technically qualify as a senior.

Some of our animals are adopted, some live with forever foster families through our Comfort Club program, and others will spend the rest of their lives at our sanctuary.

We believe in quality over quantity. That goes for the animals we take in, the foster homes we approve, and the families we adopt to. When we take an animal in, we’re making a commitment to them for the rest of their life.

And while rescuing animals is what we do now, our dreams for Silver Paws are a whole lot bigger.

We want to become a place that helps people THROUGH animals, too. We dream of having land with tiny homes for people who need a safe place to land, like domestic violence survivors or young adults aging out of foster care. A space for community events. Maybe even a pumpkin patch where the oldies can help earn their own keep. 😂

We have a LONG way to go before any of that becomes reality, but we’re working toward it.

For now, we’re a bunch of volunteers, a sanctuary full of old animals, some wonderful foster families, and a community of people who make all of this possible.

If you’re new here, we’re really glad you found us. And if you’ve been with us for a while, thank you for helping us get this far.

We hope you’ll stick around and see what we can build together.

It’s Wishlist Wednesday! 🐈‍⬛

This week, the Oreo Trio (June, Cash & Stevie) and our resident spicy old lady Clarence would like to remind everyone that cats are expensive, ungrateful little freeloaders.

And we love them SO much. 😂

If you’d like to spoil our feline overlords, we’d be so thankful for anything from their wishlist!

Every single item helps us keep these little weirdos happy, healthy and appropriately spoiled. ❤️

❤️ A little (well kinda long because I tend to ramble) update on Dolly, and a letter from me.

When Dolly arrived, her mammary tumor was larger than a softball. We hoped surgery would give her a fresh start, free from the discomfort she’d been living with.

But before surgery, Dr. Park called with difficult news. She suspects Dolly’s cancer extends beyond her mammary chain, possibly into her lymphatic system.

And honestly? We’re heartbroken.

Having recently lost my own Cookie to cancer, this hits especially hard. We pursued additional treatment for Cookie, including the Torigen vaccine, and had one more year together. With Monty, we chose comfort-focused care instead. He enjoyed another 19 months.

Their stories aren’t proof that one approach is better. They remind us that more treatment doesn’t always mean more good time.

We joke that Silver Paws Golden Days probably has one of the worst live release rates in rescue. 🤣 While other rescues celebrate high live release rates, ours is comically low.

And I’m okay with that.

Our oldies aren’t waiting for someone to adopt them. For most of them, they’re already home. ❤️

We measure success in comfortable, loved days—not how many animals leave our doors.

So, after talking through the options with Dr. Park, and took into consideration her other medical conditions, we chose to remove the large, ulcerated tumor hurting Dolly rather than pursue more extensive surgery and additional cancer treatment. We also chose not to spay her during this procedure.

Was it easy? Absolutely not. But I believe it’s the right choice for her.

Choosing comfort isn’t giving up. It’s loving them where they are.

I don’t know whether Dolly has weeks, months, or longer. I wish she’d gotten help before her tumor grew so large, and I wish I could promise her years.

What I can promise is soft beds, full bellies, endless snuggles, and love for every day she has left.

We’re going to make her final chapter beautiful.

With love,
Tabitha 🐾

We are SOOOOO close to 2,500 followers!! 🥹

And then we’re coming for 3,000. 😂

Can you help us get there? It costs nothing and takes like 30 seconds!

1. Go to our page.
2. Click the three little dots (•••).
3. Select “Invite friends.”
4. Select your friends (or all of them if Facebook lets you!) and send those invites!

That’s it!

Here’s why it actually matters for a rescue like ours.

We take in animals who aren’t exactly at the top of everyone’s adoption list. Seniors, medical cases, pitties, and animals who have already been passed over more times than they deserve.

The right home might be out there, but we can’t find it if those people never see our animals.

Every new follower is another chance for one of our kids to find their person. And even if they can’t adopt, they might foster, share a post, or help us cover a vet bill.

Plus, we’d really love to hit 3,000 so we can start begging you to help us get to 4,000 instead. 😂❤️

Thank you guys for helping us get these kids seen!

Can we make $2 Tuesday a thing? 😂

Because we are ONCE AGAIN asking for your financial support. 😶‍🌫️

We know. We know. We’re always asking for money.

Unfortunately, the dogs have yet to figure out how to get jobs, and the vet continues to insist on being paid in actual dollars.

Dolly, for example, has decided she’d like to personally bankrupt us.

Her surgery got pushed from yesterday to today because her vet had an emergency, but THAT SUCKER IS COMING OFF THIS MORNING! 🎉

And because apparently a giant mammary mass, heartworms, skin infections, and being severely underweight weren’t enough, her horrible UTI hasn’t improved after TEN DAYS of antibiotics.

So now we’re paying for a urine culture too. 🙃

The good news? Her teeth are actually pretty decent!

The bad news? That’s about the only part of Dolly that isn’t currently generating a vet bill.

We’re nervous about surgery today. She’s got a lot going on medically, but she’s also got a whole lot of personality and we’re determined to give her the best shot we can.

So here’s our proposal. $2 Tuesday. Two measly dollars.

If 500 people toss in $2, that’s $1,000 toward Dolly’s care.

Dolly would probably rather have 500 snacks, but unfortunately those don’t pay the vet.

Can’t spare $2? Share this post! And please keep Dolly in your thoughts today.

We’ll keep begging for money. You keep helping us save old dogs. And maybe someday one of these freeloaders will get a job and start contributing to their own medical bills.

🚨 HELP WANTED: DIRECTOR OF PAWLAND SECURITY 🚨

Meet Lillian. 10 pounds. Chihuahua. Approximately 5–6 years old. Belly rub enthusiast. Unlicensed security professional.

Lillian arrived at Silver Paws about 10 months ago with Phillip after a family death. We named them Phil and Lil, like the Rugrats. Not actual siblings. 😂

The shelter listed Lillian as ELEVEN and Phillip as NINETEEN.

Dr. Richter thinks Lillian is closer to 5 or 6.

Ma’am. You exaggerated your age to get into a senior sanctuary?!

She’s been enjoying the benefits.

She’s the ONLY dog who’s figured out how to access the loft beds. Fuzzy blankets and belly rubs on demand.

When she’s not lounging, she’s protecting the premises.

🦌 Deer? INTRUDER.
📦 Amazon driver? SECURITY BREACH.
🍂 Falling leaf? POSSIBLE AERIAL ATTACK.

She sleeps in a crate at night to spare the neighbors her 2 a.m. incident reports. 🤣

Sometimes she refuses to come inside until someone chases her around asking, “WHERE DID THAT GOOD GIRL GO?” Then she rolls over for belly rubs. Management has been compromised.

And before eating, she buries her food in her blankets. Apparently nobody told her the cool girls eat in public now.

But here’s the thing: Lillian is SO. FREAKING. SWEET.

She offered her belly on day one, and Waterloo’s staff adored her at her spay and dental. She’s good with our kids, appears potty trained, has no known ongoing medical issues, and needs consistent portions because she gains weight easily.

Respectful dogs are welcome. Pushy coworkers get a growl and maybe an air snap. Boundaries, people.

Now the part we’ve been avoiding.

We could have posted Lillian months ago. We didn’t.

Because we LOVE her. Like, really, REALLY love her. And selfishly? We don’t want her to leave. 🥹

But every “oopsie youngster” we help find a family opens space for a true senior who needs safe, special golden days.

Lillian deserves to be someone’s whole world. We’re reluctantly accepting adoption applications. ❤️

P.S. Phillip isn’t available for adoption while we work through his medical issues, and he may remain a sanctuary resident. Lillian, meanwhile, is ready for a solo career move. 😂

Just your friendly reminder that we have a whole bunch of really great animals who would very much like to become your problem. 😂

Think one of them might belong at your house?

Whether you already have someone in mind or have absolutely no idea who would fit your life best, it all starts in the same place: an application.

Dolly Parton has given us 9 to 5, Jolene, and decades of entertainment. Our Dolly has given us a five-star personality, astronomical vet bills, and enough p*e soaked laundry to keep us busy for the rest of our lives. 😂

And today she is having her big, nasty mass removed!!

We’re nervous. Like, reallllyyyy nervous.

There’s risk anytime an animal goes under anesthesia. But putting a senior with a laundry list of health problems under to remove a giant, nasty growth? Yeah, we’re extra nervous about this one….

But Dolly has perked up SO much since coming to us. She’s becoming a whole new dog, and we think she deserves this chance.

Dolly was someone’s pet her entire life. And somewhere along the way, her medical care was neglected. That’s not us trying to shame or blame anyone. It’s just a fact, and unfortunately, Dolly is the one paying for it.

She has heartworms. Her teeth are NASTY. Her UTI still hasn’t fully cleared up, and she’s constantly p*eing on herself. Her skin is still recovering from all the fleas and yeast, but her ears are finally starting to look better!

And despite eating enough food for a dog more than twice her size, she’s still so skinny and not gaining any weight.

She’s got a long road ahead of her, and today is a big, scary step.

But her personality? ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

We could really use your help with her surgery today.

Whether you can donate $5, $10 for a plain Halloween chain link, $25 for a decorative one, or anything in between, it all adds up.

We’re building a dream for Dolly, one chain link and one dollar at a time. ❤️

And if donating isn’t possible, please just send our girl some love today. We’re really hoping we get to share some good news when this is over.
