Today we interviewed our first mentor…
B***Y SPRINGFIELD!!
What is your main drag inspiration? Definitely the women in my life who I look up to. Drag is an opportunity for me to embody my feminine side and empower the women who have made me the person I am today.
Do you have a signature move? If so, what is it? Probably flopping on the floor when I can't think of something else to do, that usually gets a scream or two!
How do you build a strong audience connection? When I'm hosting shows I try to keep the audience constantly engaged and check in with them. A good drag show involves the audience and keeps them happy as much as possible.
Do you have any social messages that you try to instill? Drag is beautiful, and drag is fun! I have seen drag change people's lives for the better, and I think if more people knew about drag's positive qualities, the current political backlash against drag would quickly lose momentum.
Have you had much of a style evolution? In terms of makeup, yes. Otherwise I'm still wearing the same short wigs and thrifted clothes that I was years ago!
Do you have stage fright? What do you do for stage fright? When I started drag, I definitely did. The more you do it, the more confident you get, and the quieter that stage fright becomes.
Who is your dream collaborator? If we're talking drag, I'd love to work with some of the legendary queens like Peaches Christ or Coco Peru, and hopefully learn a thing or two from how they approach the artform.
What is your most memorable show? Probably the first show I ever hosted at New York Pizza and Pasta in Norman. I had no idea what I was doing, but everyone was so excited to be there, it was a fantastic atmosphere!
Who is your favorite fashion icon? I don't really follow fashion trends, but style icons would have to be the female protagonists from Star Trek, think Kira Nerys, Tasha Yar, Seven of Nine, and T'Pol. These badass women with short haircuts and an idgaf attitude are something that B***y Springfield very much exudes, years before I started watching the show!
Do you have a post-show ritual? What is it? Everything has to be put away before I go to bed, otherwise I won't be able to sleep!
