Welcome to Friends of the Warao, a Michigan-based 501(c)(3) NGO dedicated to catalyzing positive change with the Warao indigenous communities in Brazil.

We strive to create a platform for economic growth and empowerment within the Warao community.

Today we’re highlighting Josefina Jiménez, a former consultant who contributed her knowledge and support to our work with Warao communities in Brazil.

In February, alongside our partners Amor em Foco (“Love in Focus”) in Belém, we distributed food baskets and chicken to 175 Warao families.

With 30 volunteers, 3 trucks, and 3 cars, this effort was powered by deep collaboration and care. Each basket included essential staples to support families facing ongoing barriers to work and stability.

This project was funded with $2,800 and turned into real, immediate impact. And we’re not done yet, more communities still need to be reached.

We’re incredibly proud of what was accomplished, so let’s keep the momentum going. 💛

“Poquito a poco”—little by little, Mariluz turned a struggle for survival into a network of hope. 💛

Mariluz’s journey from Venezuela to Belém is a testament to the power of the Warao spirit. In 2019, she faced a world of closed doors. Today, she is a leader of the Nona Anonamo Tuma network, teaching other women to turn traditional handicrafts into a livelihood.

📿 Day 5 of Our Giving Week 📿
Through this project, experienced Warao artisans led workshops within their communities, teaching techniques, improving finishing, and helping production groups diversify their crafts. These trainings allowed artisans to exchange knowledge and strengthen their collective work.

Workshops like these help ensure that traditional craft knowledge continues while also preparing artisans to succeed in markets and fairs.

🥬 Day 4 of Our Giving Week 🥬
In 2023 and 2024, we organized food distribution days for Warao communities in Belém, including a meaningful collaboration with Conectar Association.

The Warao are Indigenous refugees from Venezuela, rebuilding their lives in Brazil while facing significant challenges. Language barriers and limited access to education make it difficult to secure stable employment, placing many families in vulnerable situations.

Access to food is not just a necessity, it is relief, dignity, and breathing room while families work toward stability.

💛 Day 3 of Our Giving Week 💛
Give today to keep Warao artisans in the marketplace!

✨ Some groups earned over R$9,000 during COP-30 alone.
✨ 1,000 bracelets were produced for a UNHCR order.
✨ One artisan shared: “I sold everything… it’s all gone.”

🌴 Day 2 of Our Giving Week 🌴
This past year, 6 artisans worked with MIRITONG to obtain and process Burití palm straw, carefully extracting and preparing the fibers by hand.

These fibers become the foundation for woven baskets, hammocks, and bags, traditional crafts that carry culture and create sustainable income.

Today, on World Indigenous Peoples Day, we celebrate the Warao: the “boat people” of the Orinoco Delta. A people whose lives are deeply tied to their rivers, traditions, and craft. Their resilience, creativity, and knowledge continue to show the strength and beauty of Indigenous cultures everywhere. 🧡🌿
